************SEPTEMBER ~ 2012*************
***WED SEPT 26  at 11:30AM ***IMPORTANT! • TODAY! • PROTEST BRIAN BILBRAY TODAY! • Bilbray is holding a press conference to talk about his "good" record on Medicare? We want to have some opposition there. Bring some Peters signs or use poster board to create your own signs that question Bilbray's record on Medicare. Sign ideas: "Hands off my Medicare!" "Hands off my Social Security!" "Bilbray: Roadblock in Congress" "Bilbray is not working for us!" "Bilbray works for special interests, not seniors!" "Why do you want to raise healthcare costs for seniors?" "Whoever Bilbray works for, it isn't us!" *WHERE: Clairemont Senior Center, 4425 Bannock Ave, SD 92117 •

•Here is some quick info on Bilbray's record:
•-In 2011, Bilbray voted for the Republican (Paul) Ryan budget that would end Medicare
. This vote continues his history of voting to cut Medicare, including $115 billion in cuts in 1997 and $270 billion in cuts in 1995.
•-Bilbray himself has voted to keep health benefits for members of Congress and voted to block attempts to require disclosure of whether he receives the taxpayer funded coverage.
•-Voted Against Protecting Social Security and Medicare Benefits from Privatization (In March 2011, Bilbray voted against a measure that would have prohibited funds from being used to develop or implement a system that cuts Medicare benefits, eliminates guaranteed health coverage for seniors or establishes a Medicare voucher plan that limits payments to beneficiaries in order to purchase health care in the private sector)
•-Voted to repeal the Affordable Care Act
(Obamacare/Healthcare Reform) - By voting for a broad repeal of the ACA, he demonstrated his unwillingness to work across the aisle. If ACA was repealed, prescription drug costs would increase for 45,600 seniors who hit the Part D drug “donut hole” and would deny new preventive care benefits to 432,000 seniors
THANK YOU ALL FOR SHOWING UP! We appreciate all your efforts, Margaret Mandy, Political Director, San Diego County Democratic Party, 8340 Clairemont Mesa Blvd., Suite 105, San Diego, CA 92111 Phone: (858)[masked] | Fax: (858)[masked] www.sddemocrats.org

***SAT SEPT 29  at 10:00AM SEPTEMBER SUPER WALK w/ TONI ATKINS & BOB FILNER! Early voting begins in just two weeks, so every day we have left to reach voters is precious. What we need most right now are volunteers who will knock on doors and talk to voters about our candidates in key races -- like Bob Filner for Mayor and Scott Peters for Congress.  Will you join me this Saturday, the 29th, at 10:00 a.m. for a September Super-Walk to support our Democratic team? *WHERE: We're meeting at the Democratic Unity office at 8322 Clairemont Mesa Blvd., Suite 202, in San Diego (92111). This is the perfect way to help several Democratic campaigns at the same time, since the voters we're reaching out to live in multiple targeted districts.  You can RSVP at www.sddemocrats.org/unity. After morning refreshments and a short introductory program, we'll get some training on how to talk to voters, along with precinct lists and doorhangers. (There'll be a phonebanking option, too.)  Our special guest Saturday morning will be Assemblymember Toni Atkins, who was recently named the Majority Leader of the California Assembly. Toni is a superb representative for San Diego County in Sacramento, and she can reinforce how important our local efforts are for the future of our state.  Time is short, and our work contacting Democratic voters really does make a difference. I hope you'll sign up now -- and then walk with us this weekend!    Truly,
Jess Durfee
Chair, San Diego County Democratic Party
Member, Democratic National Committee

***THUR OCT 4 at 6:30p.m. for COCKTAILS -  CONVERSATION at 7:00 p.m. Join us for a special edition of One Voice at a Time with two voices: Sherri Lightner and Ray Ellis Our popular One Voice at a Time live conversation series continues on Thursday, October 4, with two voices from Council District 1. Incumbent Sherri Lightner and challengerRay Ellis will sit down with me on stage at the Institute of the Americas to discuss each of their visions for the district.   It is the only City Council seat up for grabs. Lightner and Ellis have vastly different backgrounds and approaches to leadership but they've both bucked the orthodoxy of their parties. That said, who wins the seat will determine whether there's a Republican or Democratic majority on the council.   Early voting begins soon and this will be a conversation like no other. We're throwing out the rules about debates. No time keeper, no formal openings and closing. It will be up to me to manage them and make sure it's fair.    Members at the Inside Voice ($101) level and above will be admitted for free. All others will be asked to make a $5 donation. Please bring a friend who isn't familiar with VOSD.   RSVP on our Facebook page or email Summer if you're coming so we know how much beer and wine to bring. Politics always goes down better with a cocktail. What do you want to know about the candidates? Add your voice to the conversation on Twitter with #onevoicesd. I look forward to seeing you there. Scott Lewis CEO, Voice of San Diego * *Where: San Diego, CA 92037 *How Much:  Free to VOSD members at Inside Voice level and above  All others asked for $5 donation

Hello Wonderful Office Volunteers!, We received a very large shipment of thousands of door hangers just a little while ago, and I need your help getting them ready to get out to voters!    We'll have precinct walkers stopping by tomorrow afternoon to pick up their door hangers so they can walk their precincts.  All I need your help with is bundling them in to bunches of 50 so that they are easy to count and get out the door.  Can you come in tomorrow sometime between 9:30 a.m. and 5:00 p.m.?  The earlier the better so that we have them ready as soon as possible.  Thanks so much for your help, and I hope to see you in our office tomorrow!  Best, Meg Margaret Mandy Political Director, San Diego County Democratic Party, 8340 Clairemont Mesa Blvd., Suite 105, San Diego, CA 92111 Phone: (858)[masked] |  Fax: (858)[masked] www.sddemocrats.org

Online Voter Registration Now Available in California
For the first time ever, voters in our state can now register completely online -- no paper form needed. Californians whose current addresses match the address they have on file with the DMV can register (or reregister) at www.sandiegovotes.org. About 70% of people eligible to vote in San Diego County are still not registered. The deadline is coming up in just over a month, on October 22, so please share that website widely and make sure everyone you know is signed up! Especially in this presidential election year, new registrants and first-time voters are a key part of the Democratic electorate.

Volunteer to Sign Up New Voters -- Deadline in Just One Month!

Over the next four weeks, we have a chance to ensure that San Diego solidifies our status as a "blue" county by registering thousands of Democrats. We just need volunteers to staff our Democratic Party booths at upcoming events to reach out to potential voters and get them on the rolls. Will you join us? Those opportunities include naturalization ceremonies in Chula Vista and downtown, Adams Ave. Street Fair on Sept. 29-30, the Little Italy Festa on Oct. 14, and campus-based activities at SDSU, UCSD, and USD. You can sign up at www.sddemocrats.org/bluecounty or call us at (858) 277-3367.

Spread the Word About This Election Through Social Media

A study published last week by a UCSD professor found that one Election Day message sent in 2010 got at least 300,000 additional people to vote. Social media, including Facebook, will be even more important in informing and mobilizing voters this year -- and you can help. First, please "like" us on Facebook and follow us on Twitter. And in the coming weeks, we urge you to share and retweet the County Democratic Party's messages and add some of your own! Just by letting your friends know that you're volunteering, donating, or voting to support Democrats, you'll be motivating them to get engaged too.

******Important: The Oct 22nd voter registration deadline is still in effect for the upcoming 2012 general election.****** Did you see the news? The voting bill you advocated for was signed into law Monday by Governor Jerry Brown, and we couldn't have done it without you.  Together, we've scored a victory for democracy. When Election Day Voter Registration takes effect, voting will be open to any citizen who is eligible and willing to exercise this fundamental democratic right. The new law, Assembly Bill 1436 (Feuer), will remove an arbitrary and anti-democratic cut-off date for voter registration and will stop election officials from turning away eligible California voters by allowing same-day voter registration.  Please be aware that this law will NOT be in effect for the upcoming 2012 general election. It's critical to register to vote at your current address by the deadline: October 22, 2012. Fortunately, Californians can now register to vote online (thanks to a law CLCV supporters like you helped pass last year)! Register to vote or update your address online now. »  Carol, you joined thousands of CLCV supporters who worked hard to make this law. Add to that thousands more grassroots voices from our partners at California Common Cause, Courage Campaign, Democracy for America, and many more organizations with deep-sewn democratic values. This victory, which came just in time for National Voter Registration Day today, is proof that you're making a difference, and that we achieve real progress when we work together.  Assemblymember Mike Feuer, who authored AB 1436, said, "This new law will help assure that all eligible Californians will have the chance to determine who speaks for them in Washington, Sacramento and their hometowns. By recognizing the importance of increasing voter turnout in our state, we are improving the democratic process in California."  California is once again leading the way on increasing participation in our elections, and we know that helps California voters make their strong environmental values a reality. We see it time and time again: When more Californians turn out to vote, the environment wins.  Our democracy depends on the kind of work you've done here. Thank you for helping move California forward.  Sincerely,  Sarah Rose CEO, California League of Conservation Voters

******To Presidential Debate Moderator Jim Lehrer: As American citizens concerned that the record amounts that will be spent on this campaign pose a threat to good government, we call on you to spend one of the six 15-minute segments in the first presidential debate pressing the candidates on what they plan to do to address this issue. In particular, we call on you to ask them: “If elected, would you call on Congress to study and propose a Constitutional Amendment designed to reduce the influence of money in our political system - yes or no - and, if not, what would you do to address voter concerns that campaign money is corrupting our political system?"Citizens United The 28th Amendment : To Sign this Petition go to: http://www.avaaz.org/en/us_election_debate_i_full_us_list/?bUeTxdb&v=18231 Billionaires and corporate special interests are flooding our election with campaign cash designed to capture our government for the 1%. But we can fight back with a Constitutional Amendment to fix it. Sign in the next 48 hours to ask moderator Jim Lehrer to make this a focus of the first presidential debate, and let's see who's with us and who's against us.

***Hello,  many have reported problems with the FoodandWaterWatch.org link, for the current proposed Bill 685 for the Right to Clean Water Act. I'm not sure what is going on with their site. I am posting the link again. Hopefully it will work for everyone this time. In future, you can always try to cut and paste links in your browser too. Some computers may configured differently.  If it still does not work, at least you know about it and can vote for it in the future, or search for other petitions about AB 685 to sign. Thank You -Aura Walker  https://secure3.convio.net/fww/site/Advocacy?pagename=homepage&page=UserAction&id= *********************************************** Occupy San Diego will be celebrating its one year anniversary the weekend of October 6th and 7th, which will also mark the eleventh anniversary of the war in Afghanistan.
