We all know there's a problem with the way healthcare is currently being delivered. As long as insurance companies make the decisions about who gets what treatment and how much it costs each of us to carry insurance, nothing substantial will change.
With single payer, we can cut one of the biggest overhead costs in the current system - deciding who's insurance is going to foot the bill. There are lots of other equally simple fixes that can help us have better and cheaper healthcare.
Each of us needs to do something that pushes the California legislature to begin implementing "single payer" for all Californians. At our Fall Meetup, Cindy Young, the chair of the statewide Steering Committee working to pass Sen. Mark Leno’s single payer bill, SB810, will talk with us about what we can do.
Pilar Schiavo is the statewide coordinator of the California Nurses Association – a group that knows firsthand how the current system doesn’t work and is dedicated to making it work better. When Cindy worked for CSEA she organized fiscal analyses of every school district in California showing how much money they would save under Single Payer. She’s got a lot to say.
In the second half of the Meetup we'll look at how the "American Dream" is under siege and the real uprising sweeping the nation to save it and renew it.
The Take Back the American Dream Conference added fuel to the grassroots fire that has already been lit—in Madison, Wisconsin and town halls all over the country. The conference focused on strengthening the fast-growing American Dream Movement.
Judy Pope went to the conference and will report on what leaders like Van Jones had to say about the innovative movement-building strategies that have begun to shake up politics. Leaders of the Congressional Progressive Caucus joined with the nation's best community organizers to map out a cross-country drive for economic revival. Student leaders shared how social media is essential to stifle the forces that oppose the Dream.
The Jobs Not Cuts rally and march this Saturday is a local action based on these ideas. Your Meetup team urges you to make your voice heard. It’s time to think about the issues we want addressed in 2012.
