One year.

Yes, believe it or not, one year has passed since November 2, 2004.

One year ago this week, inspired by the words of Howard Dean and determined to take our country back, many of us were doing everything in our power to prevent four more years of George W. Bush. We phone banked, we knocked on doors, we wrote letters to undecided voters in swing states. And we gave money. Lots of it.

November 2, 2004, was a dark day for our community. But November 2, 2005 can be quite different. It can be the turning point.

With the Bush administration in scandalous shambles, the occupation of Iraq unraveling, and Arnold Schwarzenegger up against the wall on his special election, the window of opportunity is open again to take our country back.

It's up to us to keep it open. And provide some fresh air.

It's time for the truth. It's time to take our country back: neighbor to neighbor, friend to friend, from the ground up.

At 6 pm Wednesday, Howard Dean will join DFA Meetups in 400 communities from coast to coast to talk about this turning point and the culture of corruption that has taken over Washington. And what we can do to change it.

This November 2, come to your DFA Meetup for inspiration and action -- from Howard Dean and Unconditional Theatre. And for yourself.

The Dean call starts at 6 PM SHARP (doors open at 5:45) with piping hot pizza. Get there early if you want a good seat! So we can order enough pizza, PLEASE RSVP at:

Later on in the meetup...

Unconditional Theatre's "Swing State Stories"

Unconditional Theatre, producers of documentary plays "Women on Death Row" and "The Flag Project: A Response to 9-11", will perform a special meetup-only excerpted version of "Swing State Stories" -- a moving portrayal of the people who sacrificed their lives last year to defeat George W. Bush.

Performed one year to the day of the tumultuous 2004 general election, "Swing State Stories" illuminates what happened on the ground from Iowa and Ohio to Nevada and Florida. And how it impacted the people who participated in the largest electoral mobilization of volunteers in U.S. history.

After the performance, the actors involved in Unconditional Theatre would like to facilitate a dialogue with us about "Swing State Stories," the 2004 election, and the lessons learned by our community that apply to future elections like this year's Special Election. And the next presidential election in 2008.

Please join us for this very special performance and dialogue.

Speaking of burning shoe leather...

With 6 days to go before the Special Election, you can make a *BIG DIFFERENCE* at this Meetup by taking Direct Action to inform our DFA community about Getting-Out-The-Vote (GOTV) on Nov. 8.

This meetup will be the most action-oriented ever, as we phone our fellow DFA'ers to alert them to GOTV opportunities (*BRING YOUR CELL PHONE!*). These aren't pressure calls --- they're informational calls. Mostly, you'll be leaving messages. We'll use a simple script to let folks know about opportunities to volunteer from Nov. 3-8. Very easy. And in the Dean spirit of building people-to-people linkages.

With the polls thisclose on several propositions and Alameda County ground zero in voter turnout, our final push to mobilize volunteers could actually swing this election. Especially on iniatiatives as pivotal as Prop. 73 -- a pro-life rallying cry that has motivated 3-5,000 Evangelical Christians to invade our state this week for the latest battle in the abortion wars.

Again, we're making *friendly* calls to folks in the DFA community. If you feel ambitious and want to call voters, we'll have voter lists available as well.

Bring your cell phone Wednesday and take a bite-sized action that can make a big difference. (If you don't feel comfortable making phone calls, there will be other action options as well).

Finally, come on down after the Meetup for our monthly post-meetup get-together at Ben 'N Nick's on College Avenue. We have a great time drinking and discussing every month, so join us! It's just another way to make democracy fun again...

Again, so we can better prepare (and order enough pizza!), PLEASE RSVP at...
