Watch the Debate and then Dissect It!

Watch the First Debate between President Obama and Governor Romey with your friends and other Progressives.

This may not be the choice we’d most prefer, but it is the choice we have. Let’s make sure we understand the positions of both candidates!

Wednesday – October 3, 2012
6:00 – 8:30 p.m.

Rockridge Public Library
5366 College Ave.
a short walk from BART

6:00 pm – Debate starts
6:30 pm – Pizza arrives
7:30 pm – Dissect the Debate
8:00 pm – Hear about campaigns that need your help

Come and see the stark contrast between President Obama and Governor Romney!

October 3rd Topic: Domestic policy
Air Time: 6:00-7:30 p.m. Pacific Time
Moderator: Jim Lehrer (Host of NewsHour on PBS)

The debate will focus on domestic policy and be divided into six time segments 15 minutes each on topics to be selected by the moderator.

The moderator will open each segment with a question, after which each candidate will have two minutes to respond. The moderator will use the balance of the time in the segment for a discussion of the topic.

Let’s face it, Obama doesn't have the very best record and has made some unpopular decisions and failed to follow through on promises he made before the election. Any candidate has a great opportunity to call him to task on those things. The question is, can Romney do that?

This is not to say that Obama will be a door mat, because the man's singular greatest strength is his ability to speak. Whatever the weaknesses in his political views and record as POTUS, Obama will be able to leverage his uncanny ability to get his message across to level (if not tip) the playing field in his favor.

Then again, if it is the usual, protect-the-candidate, news-maven-as-moderator debate Romney will do fine. Both sides will claim victory and no one will care.

Whatever the candidates say, when the debate ends we’ll have a good opportunity to talk amongst ourselves and bring out the good, the bad and the ugly from what we’ve seen that night.

Candidates who need your support now:

Jose Hernandez is running for Congress in CD-10.

He has lived an implausible life story, realizing his dream through hard work, perseverance, and education to become an astronaut, which began when he was a nine-year old boy helping pick crops with his farmworker family in the San Joaquin Valley.

Jose is running for Congress in CD10 (Tracy/Modesto) against a first term Tea Party incumbent, Jeff Denham.

He’s a strong progressive who supports taxing the 1%. He’s in favor of single payer healthcare and the dream act. He will defend a woman’s right to choose. Let’s help him get elected.

DFA4Jose has been hard at work in the primary. Their efforts put Jose in the lead in the district’s largest city and increased Democratic turnout by 19%. Here are dates when you can walk for Jose in Tracy:

Sunday, 8/19
Wednesday, 8/22
Sunday 8/26
Choice of Mon - Wed, 8/27, 8/28, 8/29
Saturday, 9/8
Email –

and sign up for walking now / phone banking begins in September

There’s a fund raiser on September 30th for Jose and Ami Bera. Put it on your calendar and plan on coming to hear from two strong Red to Blue contenders. This is being planned by Take Back Red California and the Wellstone Democratic Renewal Club.

http://joseforcongres... Let’s retake the House in 2012!!

Abel Guillen is running for the State Assembly in AD18.

Successfully bringing Abel to Sacramento will be a key step in achieving a 2/3 super majority of Democrats in the Assembly.

Abel’s proven abilities at Peralta Colleges Board of Trustees will help Democrats drive the legislative agenda and move towards goals such as passing single payer health care.

The Wellstone Democratic Renewal Club and the East Bay Young Dem’s are hosting a fundraiser for Abel on Thursday August 30th. It’s at Humanist Hall, 390 27th St., Oakland from 5:30 to 7pm. Support Abel and these other Progressive groups efforts to get him elected.

Get Out the Vote – Where it really matters!

You get a lot more bang for the buck if you work for a Progressive Congressional candidate that has a chance of turning Red to Blue in a state where there’s a Progressive Democratic Senator who needs help and where it’s a swing state.

I'm currently looking hard at which state offers our best opportunity. Today, going to Wisconsin for GOTV looks like the right place – but I’ve still got a little more research to do.

I am asking for as much time as you can offer whether that's Saturday Nov 3 to Election day on Nov. 6 or Sat. Oct. 27 to Election Day.

Here’s what I’m asking of the campaigns wherever we go:

1 The campaign's major effort mustl be to turn out voters who support their candidate, not Republican voter suppression.

2 The people who come to work will be given jobs commensurate with their election experience and what they'd like to work on.

3 The campaign will provide housing for all volunteers

If we go to Wisconsin, in addition to helping elect Rob Zerban defeat Paul Ryan (yes, the Paul Ryan), we can help turn out Democrats for current Rep.Tammy Baldwin a progressive Democrat who is the Democrat running for the open Senate seat and we can help swing Wisconsin into the Obama campaign. We help three campaigns by working in Wisconsin.
