What we're about

blərd | noun

• a portmanteau of the words "Black" and "Nerd." First use in popular culture attributed to Dr. Turk on the TV show Scrubs.

• a black nerd.

Join us for everything from book club to comic swaps, game nights to museum visits, even online watch-a-longs! Harry Potter-themed brunches! Taco binges and Marvel movies! Blaxploitation film riff track parties! Beer and board games! Concerts! Movie premieres! Escape rooms! If it's nerdy, we're in!

There are about a million ways to be black and nerdy. This group aims to celebrate them! Whether you've memorized every episode of Star Trek: The Next Generation, are a chess champion, love cosplay, or indulge in some other form of nerddom, we want to hear what you're passionate about and geek out with you.

We also understand the complexity of identity, and that while there are shared experiences in being black or being a nerd, there are also those that are unique to being a blerd. If you're searching for that sense of communal understanding for the intersection of your blackness and your nerdiness, you've found the right place.

The Serious Stuff

We have the following rules and guidelines to keep things running smoothly. For more detail, please visit our discussion page on the group rules (https://www.meetup.com/dfwblerd/messages/boards/thread/50923817).

• Do not harass, threaten, or stalk group members. Hate speech will not be tolerated.

• We are an inclusive group - membership is open to anyone.

• Participation is expected - inactivity (3+ months without visiting the website) or multiple No Shows to events (RSVPing "yes," but then not attending) are grounds for removal from the group.

• Some of our events involve alcohol. Your participation in such events is done with the expectation that you are of legal drinking age and will partake responsibly.

• While children are not discouraged from attending, many of our events are not planned with them in mind. Events that are specifically child-free or child-friendly will be marked as such.

If you have any issues - be it with group/event accessibility, other members, etc - please contact the group Organizer, Adrienne Hood.
