Forming RPG group in/near Plano, Starting With Shadowrun 5th Ed.!

Per Stan's suggestion (http://dfwroleplayers.com/find-a-game-group/), I am creating this meetup to try and find a group.

My perfect group would be me playing Shadowrun (as opposed to GMing), but I have played and run many systems. I am mostly interested in Shadowrun, old school D&D, Traveller, GURPS, World of Darkness, Adventure, Call of Cthulhu, et al. I am curious about Hackmaster, Pathfinder, Star Wars, and others. I have been gaming since 1980, though, so there are a lot of games I have played and enjoyed.

Location-wise, my ideal group would be in Plano or very close to it.

Hey guys, I came across this after I got home, and it really helped me. I apparently made some mistakes during my character creation and this helped point them out to me.

    http://www.extell.us/sr/_Character_Builder_0.3.2.1.xlsx

Also, for anyone needing help with knowledge skills, here is a list of a few "canon" ones:

    http://www.ci-n.com/~jcampbel/rpgs/shadowrun/skills.html

I'm also still unclear about how lifestyle works. Like is it better to sacrifice a few toys and get the Luxury lifestyle, or is it better to be fully decked out with a vehicle and everything else, and settle for High lifestyle? How often does income into play? If it's like every 1 or 2 play sessions, 6d6*1000 is eventually going to be significantly better than spending 100k, but if it's just a one time deal, it would better to load up on EVERYTHING.

Michael: Military Code of Honor is defined by 6 Tenets: Loyalty, Responsibility, Respect, Integrity, Compassion & Courage. It is the corrupt leadership and soldiers who fail to disobey unlawful orders that end up doing the wrong thing. Whereas feudal time Samurai used the code to excuse their actions. Please do not link wikikiddia again, I will find other sources. Thanks for the info, I didn't know it meant only mechanized humanoids. Now I know I made the right decision, for now, maybe some day I would feel like playing one.

      July 8, 2014

    • Michael

Greg, yeah, until we start running, we can't be sure how fast runners will make money, so anyone with Luxury may need to have some moving boxes ready to go...

However, you can buy many months of lifestyle. For example, on page 96, they show James buying 12 months' worth of Middle Lifestyle.

      July 9, 2014

  • Michael

An update on buying the books.

As you all have heard by now, I recommend buying what you can at your friendly local game store, to help keep them in business and keep your local gaming community strong.

However, with Shadowrun, this gets more complicated, unfortunately, as Catalyst is not part of the Bits and Mortar program (where you get a free PDF if you buy from a participating local store), even though Madness Comics is.

So, if you want the PDF and physical books, you need to buy them separately. And to further complicate it, Battle Corps will bundle the books with PDFs for a tiny increase in cost and if you want the fancy deluxe edition hard back, a regular hardback, and a PDF, they bundle them with a huge discount.

Of course, the all-electronic approach is the cheapest, to further complicate the choices. :-P

    July 7, 2014

    • Greg

If you want to buy the book, but $60 is too much, Amazon is selling it for around $40. Supporting Madness is great, but you gotta do what your bank account allows.

      July 8, 2014

    • Michael

Well, sure, one has to assign their own priorities and decided what is or is not feasible for them. My problem is that I want more than one format and that pretty much means buy from Battle Corps or spend a LOT more money.

And if you do want multiple formats, Battle Corps may still be cheaper and, if it's comparable, giving that profit to the folks that make the game is better than not.

For example, if you want the Book and PDF for Fifth Edition, you can buy the bundle for $70 from Battlecorps or buy the book for $40.44 from Amazon (assuming you have Prime and don't pay shipping on it) and then another $29.99 for the PDF, or $70 from one vendor vs. $70.43 and two vendors.

I need to inquire with Madness about discount programs...

  • Greg

So hey, quick question. I know I'm on the waiting list, but I was wondering if this first session would be for making characters or just like running an intro adventure with premade characters or what? I love trying out new character gen rules so I thought I'd check.

Cool sounds good. I'll see y'all at 1.

It was great to hear some ideas you guys had. I wasn't expecting the character creation to take 4 hours. But hey guess thats how it goes. I am looking forward to seeing how the group clicks as one unit. I did have a small run planned but now it gives me time to add to it now that i know what character types im up against. Thanks to all who showed up. Can't wait to see y'all next time

This sunday I am out of town, otherwise I'd show up, couple of questions I had were which times you plan on playing and if it is a every week game or what is the timeframe.

    Thanks and have fun!

    July 5, 2014

    • Michael

I was thinking of Sunday, between lunch and dinner, probably every other week, and aiming for 4-5 hours, so it's not too burdensome schedulewise. Hence our 1:00 PM meeting this week (although some are gathering for lunch at 11:30).

This way, we do not lock up Friday nights or Saturday, so that we don't compete with our regular, non-gaming social activities.

For location, I was thinking Madness Comics and Games. They have lots of open space and if anyone needs to pick up materials, they can support a Friendly Local Game Store at the same time. :-)

Hey everyone, I found a cool character generator online for SR5 if you want to play around with some character builds.

True, but you get what you paid for. :-) One of my grad school chums that plays S5 says that the Hero Lab generator works great. It costs $29.99 - http://www.wolflair.c...

Heya, if you want to show up for lunch before the game, then let's go with The Franchise, a nice neighborhood sportsbar next door to Madness. I will be there at 11:30 Sunday. Anyone is welcome to join me, it is certainly not mandatory. You are welcome to show up at 1:00 at Madness, as originally planned.

    July 1, 2014

    • Jason

      I'll see you around 11:30

      July 1, 2014

  • Michael

If everyone shows up, it is entirely possible that a second complete group playing a completely different game might form. So, please show up.

Again, the worst that happens is that you get to meet some fellow local RPGers and spend some time at one of the best gaming stores I have seen.

Wish I lived closer, but Plano is a bit out of my jurisdiction..Played Shadowrun 4E ages ago and liked it..Could use some good sci fi cyberpunking..
    Good gaming to you all.

If you are interested in meeting for lunch that day at, say, 11:30 AM, then please speak up and let me know if you prefer Mexican, Cuban, Sushi, or Thai; once we have a cuisine consensus, I can provide restaurant details.

    June 25, 2014

    • Phil

      No preference anything is okay

      June 26, 2014

OK, I am going to go with the least interesting choice, just to be safe. :-)

Never played shadow run.whats it about?

    June 24, 2014

    • Jason

what i really like about shadowrun is that literally anything is possible. i think it just might be one of the most flexible systems for characters you can play.

      June 29, 2014

    • Michael

Oh, I didn't think you were putting it down. It is very possible that adding magic could result in a panacea that eliminates many of the factors that contribute to cyberpunk, especially in a "high magic" game. But that is not the case here. Actually, magic brings some new darkness...

      June 30, 2014

  • Michael

For folks RSVPing now, I did set a wait list for more than seven people, but please don't let the waitlist discourage you. The initial RSVPs were to express interest in forming a group in the area. Now that we have a time, game, and place, some of those folks may be no-shows.

And since we are at Madness, the worst that happens is you get an extra visit to a great game & pop culture store. :-)

    June 27, 2014

    • Greg

If the players aren't taking the session off on some weird tangent that no GM could plan for, then they're not doin it right, haha.

      1 · June 27, 2014

    • Michael

Most of the runs I GM'd or played in involved intricate planning that eventually ended up with "hell with it, get 'em!". :-)

      June 27, 2014

  • Matt

I would be interested but it would depend on when you wanted to play. I have played 4th, and have the core book for both 4th and 5th.

    June 24, 2014

    • Michael

Here is some feedback from some long-time SR GMs that I knew in grad school:

"Yes, 5E is good. 3E to 4E was a major shift in some of the core rule mechanics, and 5E resolves a lot of the problems it introduced."

"I have been enjoying running SR5 since last October. I think it is an improvement. The skill+attribute for rolls is more balanced than pure skills. I think they took some of the good stuff from 3e like intiative and updated 4e. I am finding it a bit too cinematic for my tastes and will likely introduce a couple house rules to make it more gritty but overall it has been good."

      I am optimistic about 5E. :-)

      June 25, 2014

    • Jason

5e rule are a simplified version that takes the best part from all editions. Then takes them and tweaks them into a faster playing game. I myself haven't played 5E playtest but I've heard good things about it.

Ok. I enjoy mexican food. Now on to the game stuff. If you want i can give a heads up on what I'd like to run. Since it looks like i might be the GM. I can give y'all and idea of what i want to run. I can send out a mass email detailing what i have in mind. Here's my e-mail [masked]

    June 25, 2014

    • Michael

Jason, sounds good. I would suggest that we give the rest of the folks a day or two to provide their feedback and clarify their interest in attending before we move forward with that.

      June 25, 2014

    • Jason

      Ok. Not a problem.

      June 25, 2014

  • Matt

Turns out I can't make Sundays. Hope the game is fantastic, and some one should let me know how 5th edition plays.

    June 25, 2014

    • Michael

      Thanks, Matt, will do!

      June 25, 2014

  • Michael

Phil and Ron raise excellent points. I should provide some more detail.

We are going to have a wide mix of experience levels coming together and we don't want to leave anyone behind.

My expectation is that when we meet on the 6th, we will:

    - get to know each other a bit
    - talk about the game system and background
    - the style of game we want to run
    - maybe some discussion of real-world logistics (i.e., any serious issues with the time and location)
    - discuss what characters we might like to play and how the team came together (or will come together) etc.

I think a good goal for our first meeting will be to have a solid team of Shadowrunners and an adequately educated (on the game) set of players to run them.

An actual run would be nice, but we may only have time for something simple.

Heck, Jason may want to role-play out some of the background stuff for the characters.

We could even meet ahead of time for lunch that day nearby and chit chat a bit beforehand.

    June 25, 2014

  • Michael

If your RSVP status changes, please update so we know how much we need to recruit people. :-D

    June 25, 2014

It's on the SE corner of W Parker and Custer Rd in the same parking lot as Walmart. They recently moved to a larger location, which faces W Parker.

      June 25, 2014

  • Michael

Cool! Since Shadowrun is an option, let's plan around that. I have every edition of Shadowrun except the first (I mostly have just the rules for 5th right now), but I have not significantly played since third edition.

So, it's OK if some folks have never played Shadowrun. We'll sort out it in a friendly, supportive environment.

I would suggest that we not lock up Friday nights or Saturday, so that we don't compete with our regular, non-gaming social activities.

I was thinking of Sunday, between lunch and dinner, probably every other week, and aiming for 4-5 hours, so it's not too burdensome schedulewise.

This weekend would be short notice and Texicon is running.

For location, I was thinking Madness Comics and Games. They have lots of open space and if anyone needs to pick up materials, they can support a Friendly Local Game Store at the same time. :-)

So, let's try Sunday, July 6th, 1:00 PM, at Madness Comics!

    June 25, 2014

    • Jason

I have played mostly Shadowrun 3e. Ive tried 4e but could never get a group together. 5E seem like an updated version of 4e. But it's a game i like running.

      June 25, 2014

  • AWizardInDallas

I run games on Friday and Saturday from my home in Plano. I run Pathfinder games and prefer to GM.

    June 25, 2014

    • AWizardInDallas

The Pathfinder RPG is a spin-off of D&D 3.5 by Paizo publishing. It uses the D20 license so is very similar still to D&D 3.5/D20. Oddly, most of my players are female. I have been playing since AD&D 1E. :)

Shadowrun is where man and machine meet. Magic is reborn in the new world. And its set in the near future of 2070s. Corporations run thing and we as players run the streets and shadows working for the highest bidder.

    June 24, 2014

    • Michael

Much more than that. While it has the dystopian, gritty, techno vibe of cyberpunk, the inclusion of magic makes a world of difference in both the milieu and mechanics.

My previous Sunday group fell apart when our GM moved to Austin. If you happen to run any of these on a Sunday, I'd definitely be down. I only started playing PnP about 4 or 5 years ago, and most of my experience has been with Pathfinder, but I'd love to play Shadowrun, WoD, or Savage Worlds again. Never played any of the other systems. I'm not a fan of D&D 4.0 though.

    June 24, 2014

Can play most Friday nights but more available on Saturday and Sunday. Would like to play d&d but anything would be fine, just let me know what system so I can figure out a character. My go to is typically rouge/ninja however I don't mind pulling support if everyone else is mid/max tanks

I played mostly PC rpgs, not enough PnP fun.
There is a threat to rpgs being played by people who have no value for roleplay, overall enjoyment of the story itself, just item hoarding, gold & xp and max out char.. I would like to DM a game where numbers and die rolls are in the background, not the main event.
I like D&D rules 1&2, hate the others. I have played Champions but little else PnP, mostly PC. Lucasarts outdid the senile George in their games, especially in Knights of the Old Republic 2.
