GO LOCAL: How to Capitalize on Check-ins, Reviews, Social Coupons & More

If you own a restaurant/bar, retail store, or service business, you definitely don't want to miss this Meetup! Note that this will be a hands-on learning experience if you want it to be, so there are some apps you can download before you come. Please see "Hands-on To-Do List" below. If you don't have a laptop or other tool to use, you can still learn lots, so please don't let that deter you. To make sure you get the most out of this Meetup please tweet your burning questions and interests to Danielle @
SocialMediaDFW.
About Danielle Glick Danielle has 15 years of experience in interface design with some experience in photography, videography, and copywriting. While she was working for a Dallas advertising agency as a User Experience Designer, Danielle became a member of the team that was asked to create the very first social media marketing efforts for a few nationwide brands in the baked goods industry. However, no one in the company was a social media expert, so Danielle took a hands-on approach– she invented her own brand! Danielle used her interest in the Dallas food scene and branded herself on Twitter as
@Dallas_Foodie, and later created the related fan page,
Facebook.com/DallasFoodie. From these accounts Danielle experimented and learned how to build a social media marketing network from scratch, and she saw a lot of missed opportunities for businesses not using social media. Now, Danielle has her own small business,
DGdesign, which specializes in helping other small business owners in Dallas maximize their marketing budget through social media. Take a look at Danielle’s research and strategy-based approach to social media marketing at
DGdesign.biz and on Twitter @
SocialMediaDFW.
Why You Should Come This Meetup will be a hands-on learning experience to discuss the often-overlooked, yet rapidly growing channels of social media: the locally-targeted stuff. This includes mobile location-based services with search, check-ins or reviews, local-based web sites, and social coupons. We’ll go over why you should care about each of these emerging social media channels and how you can capitalize on them right now, before everyone else realizes the opportunities they're missing out on!
Hands-on To-Do List: each of the channels listed below has an associated free mobile app that we will be using! Please fee free to download them to your iPhone, iPod, iPad, or Android device. If you don't have a mobile device, that's ok, you will still learn. We will help you decide what may work for you in your business. Some of the channels we will be discussing we be:

  • Urbanspoon

  • Thrillist

Danielle Glick gave us a great overview of the primary local social media sites and apps as well as some useful strategies and tips on how businesses can capitalize on each service. I especially liked the example of how the pet-friendly restaurant cleverly used Foursquare to attract new business. Thanks, Danielle, and thanks Stephanie and Sandy for putting on another great meetup.

This was one of my favorite presentations so far! Practical information that is useful to any size business and any type of business. Danielle did a wonderful job and I can't wait to implement many of the useful tips that she shared with our group.

This was a good topic, and categorized various types of local applications, and educated me on several new applications, such as bizzy. I would love to see another session on how/if SOHO or non-retail businesses have a "go local" play.

Daniellle introduced me to an an entirely new aspect of social media in a way not to overwhelm but to know enough to know where to go with it. Great prep and knowledge of the subject. Special guest added to the authority of the evening.

Best Meetup so far! We had more time for networking and the group really "clicked". Danielle not only gave an interesting presentation, but she also brought high-profile community reps from the industry who shared insider tips and tricks.

52 Yeses... is not quite enough for comfort. To unlock a Swarm Badge we need 50 people in attendance WITH a mobile device that can download apps (i.e. Foursquare). Please invite your colleagues and clients to RSVP and learn why they'd even want a Swarm Badge.
