Take I-8 toward Alpine and continue east to exit 40, Hwy 79/Japatul Rd. Go north on Hwy 79 about 3 miles; make a sharp left to stay on 79, go 3 more miles until you see the Cuyamaca State Park sign on the right. There is limited parking in a small gravel lot just beyond the sign.
(NOTE ON PARKING: You will need and Adventure Pass to park in this area. Get them at REI / Big 5 among other places. Ridesharing is encouraged, post in the comments if you want to carpool)
For those of you who were there: This is a repeat of my birthday run 3 years ago; approximately an 8- mile loop with a short diversion to the peak along the way with a fantastic view and an even better feeling. Worth the grind all the way up!
Many more miles can be added for those needing more; you can continue on the East Mesa Road which hooks up to more trails.
I'm hoping the lilacs are blooming by that time! The run description can be found here (pay no attention to their driving directions, which are incorrect): http://www.sandiegoreader.com/news/2012/may/16/roam-oakzanita-peak-descanso-creek/
Hikers are welcome too and can hike directly to the peak and back for a shorter route.
