Virtual First Fridays at NHM

I enjoyed last month's First Fridays so let's have another go. Come for the lecture, stay for the tunes but I for one like the idea of the Dino Game Show. Ticket info below. Sign up and they'll mail you the link for the event. I don't have it. https://tickets.nhm.org/webstore/shop/viewItems.aspx?cg=vff1&c=vff3 The Future Is Now Faster than a Wi-Fi download, more powerful than an electromagnetic field, able to leap centuries in a single algorithm, the tech future is coming fast with the promise of delivering a livable future in spite of the forces arrayed against it. Discussion | 6 pm | Zoom Webinar There’s only a planet h-for-humans if there’s a planet-b-for-bees, a creature vital to earth’s prospering. And b-for-breakthroughs in what and how we eat. Lab-grown meat and leather, aeroponic produce, more yield from less arable land, climate change-adapted crops – what coming loaves-and-fishes scientific triumphs will feed more of us, more responsibly? Each discussion forum will be moderated by Patt Morrison, L.A. Times journalist, author and Emmy-winning television and radio host. ELLEN JORGENSEN, PH.D. Free NASA lectures: Making a Mars Rover

Online event

What are the steps in getting the Mars 2020 rover mission ready to head to Mars, and how do we prepare for operations once we’re there? This month’s show will walk through activities leading up to the mission’s planned liftoff in July — build, test, transport and launch. We’ll then transition to a primer on how JPL uses Mars analog test facilities on Earth for operating the rovers once they’re on the Red Planet. Join us to hear about how we re-create different aspects of the Mars environment and test using stand-ins and “stunt doubles” for our spacecraft). Host: Preston Dyches Speaker(s): TBD Directions: This will be an online event

Come be a pagan (druid?) with me--Livestream summer solstice @ Stonehenge

You know not Everything about this pandemic crap is awful (though the closure of the Hollywood Bowl yesterday pretty much had me in tears.) OK well most of the pandemic sucks but I find myself getting to see so much more streamed. And I like the sound of this one. Let's celebrate the summer solstice on the plains of merry old England. We can avoid the cost, the travel, the early morning hours, the Crowds (COVID or no I'm always OK w/that). English Heritage runs Stonehenge and they're planning a live stream. They are 8 hours ahead, sunrise is 4:51AM that day local time but of course you need some pre-dawn coverage to get the full effect. SO, I'll call this for now about 8:30PM PST. They haven't posted it yet but promise they will and then I'll put it out here. If you want to watch their Stonehenge discussion on Facebook before then (you don't need a FB account) go here: https://www.facebook.com/englishheritage/videos/274330153601292/ Starts at 3 min. He's a bit 'chipper' but she's been working the site for 10 years so she knows her stuff. What you wear that night is of course up to you but if you dig a good pagan costume make sure you post pictures! Do you think they wore sweatpants 4500 years ago because mine are starting to feel like a 2nd skin?!
