Where: Inspire Massage, 1241 N. Green Street, McHenry, IL 60050, phone[masked]

Instructor: Rita Hickman, owner of Inspire Massage, [masked]

About the class:

Rita, is very knowledgeable and passionate about the physical and functional health of the human body. We start and finish class with personal questions and observations about our individual concerns and progress. Personally, this time has been very informative and enlightening.

Most of the class is spent with Rita, leading the class through an (A.T.M)"Awareness Through Movement," exercise. These ATMs consist of small deliberate and often non-habitual movements that focus on a particular areas of the body. For example: We spent several sessions exploring and working the pelvis. Personally, this has been very good, allowing me to address issues with my hip.

As a result of those sessions. I have gained a better understanding, awareness of my pelvis, resulting in flexibility and pain relief. I look forward to these weekly sessions. ---- Nancy Steinmeyer

A little about the Feldenkrais Method:

The Feldenkrais method is a revolutionary approach to health and fitness using what Dr. Moshe Feldenkrais called "Awareness Through Movement," (A.T.M) people of any age or condition can learn to move more comfortably and effectively. The Feldenkrais method can help people relieve chronic pain or occasional back pain, shoulder tension, and most other muscular skeletal difficulties. Individuals diagnosed with neurological disorders such as stroke, cerebral palsy, or multiple sclerosis discover easier, healthier ways to function.

Medical doctors, chiropractors, and other health professionals increasingly acknowledged the Feldenkrais method as a valuable, educational adjunct to their treatments. The Feldenkrais approach to helping people improve their everyday functioning is quite compatible with the medical focus on treating injuries and illness. With many types of therapy people find that pain or problems recur after a few hours, days, or weeks. Genetics may be blamed, or age or occupation, and people sometimes assume they just have to learn to live with it. These notions may be unnecessarily limiting and self-fulfilling. However, with the Feldenkrais method you can learn to live in ways that minimize or eliminate many problems. From “Awareness Heals” by Steven Shafarman
