What we're about

THE DHARMA COMMUNITY CAFE' : films / readings /discussions

We show and discuss a variety of films that reflect or incorporate aspects of dharma -- from documentaries to films set in Buddhist/Hindu countries with Buddhist/Hindu themes to western comedies and dramas which contain certain dharma principles.

Through this means, we aim at building a sangha.

We typically meet twice a month -- on a Friday or Saturday night --- in a small apartment in Mid-City. (If a new film showing in local theatres qualifies as "dharma movie", we might pick a time and location and make it a meetup.)

Below is a list of films we have shown and discussed already. (We are open to revisiting some of them in the future)

• Her • Shortcut to Nirvana • Samsara • Windhorse • Ida • Departures • Water

• Travelers and Magicians • Spring, Summer, Fall, Winter, Spring.....

• When the Iron Bird Flies • The Cup • Ostrov/The Island

• Ram Dass: Fierce Grace • Milarepa • Why has Bodhi-Dharma Left for the East?

Sun. 1p: discussion of 1963 Indian film "THE HOUSEHOLDER" @DeutschesHaus on Moss

Join us Sunday, September 26th, 1p to 2:15p at the Deutsches Haus, along Bayou St John. If it's available, we try to meet in the "Classroom". Otherwise, we'll be in the main hall or maybe outside in the back. Come and leave anytime. Use their free parking in the back.
We'll discuss the 1963 film "THE HOUSEHOLDER". First Merchant Ivory production, based on the Ruth Prawer Jhabvala novel. Comedy/Drama. 1 hour 40 minutes. In English. [[Trivia: After the film was finished and edited then legendary Indian director Satyajit Ray was invited to re-cut the film and uncredited re-edited the picture in just three days.]]

PLOT: A young Indian newlywed finds his independent wife troublesome and seeks help and advice from his overbearing mother, a supposedly worldly wise friend, an American seeker of enlightenment and a swami.
