Empowering Neighborhoods With .nyc Domain Names

From: Tom L.
Sent on: Wednesday, April 29, 2009 4:30 PM
We're having a Meetup for Imagining New York City's Internet Space - the .nyc TLD!

What: Empowering Neighborhoods With .nyc Names

When: May 6,[masked]:00 PM

Price: $5.00 per person (suggested)

Where: Neighborhood Preservation Center, 232 East 11th, NY 10003

Description: Imagine online neighborhood media centers that empower neighbors to locate and talk to one another about the problems and opportunities that affect them.

With the arrival of the .nyc TLD (like .com and .org but just for New York City) we'll soon have control over the city's web presence and the capacity to create neighborhood sites such as,,,,, greenwich-village, etc.

Come hear about this new development that promises to strengthen neighborhoods and help us create a more livable city.

Who Should Come: Residents interested in improving local communication and a desire to help answer questions such as: Who will operate these neighborhood media centers? What content should be on the sites? Who should supply the collaboration tools? How will collaboration within neighborhoods and between neighborhoods be achieved?

See our Traditional Neighborhood Names wiki page for more on the questions we'll address.

The meeting is sponsored by Inc., the not-for-profit created to guide .nyc's acquisition and development.

Where: Neighborhood Preservation Center, 232 E. 11th Street.
When: Wednesday, May 6, 6-8 PM.

We've limited (20) seating so rsvp to [address removed].

P.S. Some believe there are those who would oppose improved local communication; that enabling local collaboration is counter to some historic top down traditions. I disagree. But it would be good to see bottom-up supporters at the event and supporting these potential gems in case I'm wrong.

NOTE: We will pass the hat with a recommended donation of $5.
