Job Description:

The Software Design Engineer has the primary responsibility to participate in, review and validate the technical approach for medium to complex projects and programs within the appropriate product. The position requires active involvement and collaboration with business analysts, developers and architects throughout the development process. The position will work to maintain a deep understanding of the product’s capabilities and the business needs addressed by the product. The position is expected to continuously expand their knowledge related to software development languages and methodology, software design patterns, databases and operating platforms. .

Responsibilities:
Technical Analysis, Design & Specification
• Work with partner on technical design and development of complex, cross-functional, multi-platform products from a technical perspective.
• Responsible for assessing technical requirements to meet the business objectives.
• Organize and participate in walkthrough reviews of technical specifications
• Assess technology frameworks and assist in selecting tools to build software
Coding, Testing and Documentation
• Organize and participate in walkthrough reviews of programs of average to high complexity
• Participate in Proof of Concept projects driven by decisions from the Investment board.
• Review partner deliverables and assure that technology requirements are met and standards adhered to

Planning Implementation & Support
• Responsible for anticipating problems (technical, operational, process, organizational) and work with partner to identify and implement the best solution in a timely manner.
• Provide and / or review estimates on activities and tasks required to perform design, coding and unit testing
• Assist in the root cause analysis and resolution of complex software issues found during user acceptance testing or in production environments
• Assist with performance tuning activities related to software issues that are impacting system performance in user acceptance testing or production environments
• Support response to sales proposal efforts.

Relationships & Communication
• Collaborate with enterprise architects to establish vision and integrate that vision into products in alignment with product roadmaps.
• Conduct meetings to disseminate technology direction within organization and assigned product area teams.
• Articulate to the organization how information and technology can be used in the context of business strategy in relation to a given product.
• Maintains a deep understanding of the product capabilities, business needs addressed and technology components for assigned products.
• Align with overall business need
Qualifications:
• Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Engineering, Business, Math or related discipline (information technology focus preferred).
• 8+ years of experience in related technology field/function.
• 2-5 years experience working with SQL 2008
• Proficiency with MS Office suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint and Visio) demonstrated by 3+ years of prior use on the job
• 7+ years Object Oriented design experience
• 1 year VB 6 experience
• Understands the fundamentals of .NET (from version 1.1 up) (if candidate has 7+ years of OO design, then 2-3 years of .NET is fine. If candidate does not have other OO experience, then 7+ years .NET)
• Ability to travel domestically or internationally as needed for business execution

Preferred Additional Skills

• Advanced degree in MIS or Computer Science preferred.
• Exceptional communication skills – written, verbal and presentation – with internal and external parties

• Experience defining technical issues and opportunities as well as developing strategies, plans, and processes.
• Understanding of business object and component framework architecture.
• Knowledge of Harris’ industry group, trends, directions, major issues, regulatory considerations and trendsetters.
• Ability to work with others in a constructive and collaborative manner.
• Knowledge of emerging technologies (new to Harris as well as those that are new to the relevant customer industry).
• In depth knowledge of Harris’ technology architecture direction and product development methodology.
