Coat (or jacket) sew-a-long

When I bought the fabric for my duffle coat, I also bought fabric for another coat. As usual (for me), work got in the way of making that coat and now I have another piece of fabric in my stash that I really like and would much rather wear. Anyway, I thought I start a sew-a-long to get me motivated. I already have the fabric (a blue striped heavy cotton twill) and the pattern (Vogue 2859). I ordered the frog today and would be ready to start.

I scheduled the sew-a-long for the end of November. This should give everyone enough time to plan and gather supplies. Post your progress and don't forget to upload some photos of your progress!

I've done more than expected! The front and back pieces are stitched together, the sleeves are stitched together, the front facing is stitched together. "Only" left is figuring out how to attach the sleeves, attaching the sleeves and attaching the front facing. How was everyone else getting on?

      Woohoo! That's fantastic, well done!
Attaching sleeves: after matching all the notches: lots of pinning, lots of basting before sewing! That ought to do the trick.
      Good luck!

Oh no! I didn't do a single stitch while this sewalong was taking place. That's very bad timing on my part (I was off sick). What a shame. We'll need to post another one of these, maybe in a couple of months? February-ish?

    Hi everyone!
I hope someone might be able to help. I'm trying to make Vogue's 2859 coat but would need to make a FBA. Now, I'm kind of stuck with which method I should use. The coat itself has a waist dart so it's not a FBA without any darts (like in my duffle coat). All the other tutorials I've found so far have a bust dart which this coat does not have. I'll upload a picture of the drawing in a second but HELP! please.
    Many thanks

Just a small update: I paper fitted the front this morning and decided to just add more fullness at the centre front. If it doesn't turn out great, I still have enough fabric to make another coat :)

    • Giselle

Doing a FBA instead of adding at the centre front usually works out better. You don't need a dart - just draw a line up to the bust point, and from there into the armhole (keep a hinge at the armhole). Then cut towards the bust point from a point that shapes a triangle, keep a hinge. Then pull the two font pieces apart by the needed distance. That keeps your armhole and the centre front opening intact. Let me know if you need more info!

My partner is away for the weekend of 26 & 27 November so I can spread out and sew all over the house. Anyone working on their project for this sewalong want to join me at my place in South London this weekend?

I have completed my first coat 😊 using a half price butterick pattern and using Milton which I have never used before. There is a small mistake which I will undo at some point, but I have been wearing the coat and it is nice and warm, I want to make another butterick coat, which is on the same pattern sheet and of course my cape.

Well done that is impressive. A coat is on my Make list but need to acquire a few more technical skills before I attempt it.

Thanks. It was marked as "Easy " and it was unlined, I figured I better start off easy lol.

Sounds great, I'm still working on my very first jacket (pea coat made from demin - missing its season!), so would be good to get something firm into the diary and actually have something to wear if we get a winter!

Is this the peacoat in Built by Wendy, coats and jackets book?

About to start muslin this weekend for the Gabrielle Strehle coat from Burda 10/2012 #135

Is anyone interlining with 3M Thinsulate? I saw it in the latest copy of Threads and think I will order some as I made a coat earlier this year in wool, but it's not warm!

Slow progress on a toile of Sewaholic's Cypress cape. Making out of quilted fabric and left out hood, but with the cold spell, might just add the hood back!

Does anyone have made any progress? I didn't do anything at all but have got the frog for the coat. I hope to cut out the pattern on the next monthly meeting on Wednesday. Then, hopefully again, fabric cutting next weekend and starting to assemble the coat.

I am also working on Vogue 8333 at the moment. My aim for this sew-a-long is to complete the fitting for a toile. I don't think that I will be able to finish the final garment. I do also have some other fabric, so maybe I cold aim to complete a simple coat. I will have a think.

    • Natasha

Because the pattern is quite complex and I am planning on sewing some other garments at the same time. Maybe I will finish it time!

I want to make the same or a similar tailored jacket - I am going to allow myself three years for the whole process. I can't see myself getting this done in less than 12 months, there is so much that goes into this.

I've had my eye on a Cape since last year, first thing is to try and find the pattern online, it was a 2 way Cape.

    • Giselle

A cape sounds wonderful! I've wanted to make one for a while but it's a long way down on my list. Let us know how you get on!

This is a great idea. I made three coats lasr year including one first my best friend in France. I am obsessed with coats and going to make another one this year for winter. The warehouse in Hackney sells great coating fabric at very reasonable prices.

I love shopping for fabric especially as I know I can get good quality fabric on my lemonade budget but my outfits look like champagne style -like I have shopped in Cos or Jagger

Thank you, I'll have to have a look! Autumn Ottobre just got delivered, I have soooo much sewing to do... Need more hours in the day and more money in the bank!

Just bought Butterick 6292 and going to try and finish it by the end of the sew-a-long. I already have the fabric that I want to use in my stash and will use the fabric shop at the beginning of September to buy my lining etc.

I want to make a simple short coat and a cotton jacket. Might manage to get one of these done for this sewalong.

Fantastic idea! Fancy pattern:-) This is more a maybe than a yes and have a few blazer type jackets in mind...hm, would love to give it a go and learn more! X

    • Giselle

I reckon we'll definitely need to help each other out with advice and tips and fitting, etc etc. I also have another jacket hanging around that I never got finished, so who knows, maybe I'll give that one a go too...

      1 · August 2

  • Giselle

So cool, fantastic idea! I am planning on making a tailored jacket (over the next 2-3 years to not put pressure on myself) and will probably be using Vogue 8333. I had another pattern in mind V8346 but this has a separate lapel piece whereas I want to do proper tailoring techniques, particularly on the lapels.
I want to make the necessary adjustments to the paper pieces first and then cut a toile from calico to check for fit. It would be really great to get this done for November - fingers crossed!

    • Barbara G.

Vogue 8333, be warned the novelty pocket placement is a bit of a puzzle.

      2 · August 1

    • Giselle

It looks very intriguing. I reckon if I can figure out an 'epaulette' sleeve pattern piece from a Lekala pattern, then this one can't be that bad (or so she hopes...)

      August 2

  • Marianne C.

V8333! I've made a muslin yup those pockets are something else. Would love to make it up in fashion fabric, but am very unhappy about fit of the muslin.
    A V8333 fitting session?

Can't believe how wonderful timing for this sew a long is...perfect,
    thank you for organising!

    • Giselle

Fitting session for the V8333!! Yes please! When, where? I'll be there. If you're around for the sewing session at the Bedford in Balham on BH hol Sunday, we could do it then? If not then we'll figure something else out.
