Stuff you might like to know November 2016

  • 2 days ago · 11:00 AM

This is inspired by member Wai who often comes up with useful tips and sources. There have been loads of tips, exhibitions and offers on it so thanks to all who contributed. The idea is that if you come across useful info- a tutorial on a blog, a pattern sale, a workshop, a discount offer that you would like members to know about then put it in the comments column. If you blog and have just put up a post then you can let us know here. Do you know of an show or exhibition?, have you found a new fabric source, a dressmaking site, a new pattern release? - anything that would interest members- then just add a comment with the details.

I will date the "meetup" to the end of each month so you can post comments for the whole of November and then will start a fresh one for December.

Thanks to everyone who contributed to this month's information. Wai, did you know you get a free downloadable pattern if you sign up to the new tv sewing channel info? The downside is that It doesn't seem to be in a format that I can download!

Hi Barbara, yes, chose the blouse, then realised it's similar to a pattern from recent Love Sewing magazine! Which pattern are you having problems with?

    • Jennifer T.

HI Barbara, I don't know if this will help, but I chose the blouse, clicked the download link in the email, and it opened the pattern in my Safari browser. There didn't seem to be a download button once the page was open, so I went to File, and clicked Save As. Then I could save it to my desktop as a PDF.

Sherwoods Fabrics online shop is having loads of discounts for Black Friday this week. I bought some knitted fabric from there last month and the quality was great.

    Hi everyone!
I hope someone might be able to help. I'm trying to make Vogue's 2859 coat but would need to make a FBA. Now, I'm kind of stuck with which method I should use. The coat itself has a waist dart so it's not a FBA without any darts (like in my duffle coat). All the other tutorials I've found so far have a bust dart which this coat does not have. I'll upload a picture of the drawing in a second but HELP! please.
    Many thanks

Just a small update: I paper fitted the front this morning and decided to just add more fullness at the centre front. If it doesn't turn out great, I still have enough fabric to make another coat :)

Burda half price patterns until 10th December and another can't remember, which. Seen in Wimbledon sew. Also I wasn't aware but shops have a pattern club for simplicity, burda and new look. If you buy 4 patterns you get 5th free. You can buy all half price and the free one can be free full price. as in your sewing shop, I was told by another customer. I have already filled a sheet.

Issue 33 of Love Sewing magazine, out now, has an extra free pattern if you buy it in Tesco. One is a Simple Sew Pattern for a dress in bust sizes 32" to 46" and the extra pattern is a button front rather vintage style dress in finished garment bust size 88 cm to 102 cm, I think this would be the equivalent of 32 to 38 inch bust size.
