Day 1 of 3 – Getting Started with Drupal: Setup and Content

Objectives: At the end of this free 3-hr training session, you will be able to

  • Install Drupal so that it can run locally on your laptop
  • Locate and recognize the directory structure for Drupal's code base
  • List the server technology required to run Drupal
  • Distinguish between default content types and the module-based content types that can be enabled
  • Identify the Drupal functionality that allows you to assign descriptive terms to your content
  • Create custom content types
  • Add a field to a content type
  • Add a page to the main menu
  • Describe what comprises a webpage in Drupal
  • Distinguish between blocks and nodes

Prerequisites: You need your own laptop computer and permission to install software applications on the computer. Government owned or business owned laptops might not allow software to be installed so please check with your IT staff before attending. We will not be able to assist you with the installation if you do not have the right permissions.

Materials: This is a free training event. There will be no handouts. Please bring paper and pen to take notes.

Important note: This is not your typical Drupal meetup. This is a facilitated training event. We will start on time to allow those who need to be home at a decent hour. When class ends, there will be a short meet and greet for those who have time to stay.

If you couldn't make the free training, but you'd like to get ramped up for a reasonable price, check out this class on January 12! http://drupal-in-a-day-bixal.eventbrite.com/

Could someone tell me what taxi service works out there? I am planning to catch one from the Vienna Metro. I'm coming from Union Station Metro.

FWIW, the last time I went out to Bixal, I was able to catch a cab (out the north exit from the Metro) but had to wait 5 or 10 minutes (there were a couple people waiting ahead of me, and taxis would trickle in now and then). Definitely allow plenty of time to get from Metro to Bixal.

Also worth noting: make sure you tell the driver it's in Oakton, or give the intersection. I thought it was a Fairfax address, and it turns out that there's another 3050 Chain Bridge Rd about a mile down the road in Fairfax :-P

I figured it out it's Fairfax Yellow Cab. See ya at 6!

Another quick note. I recently taught a training session where one of the computers was running Vista. Yikes! I know. Anyway, the Acquia dev desktop would not install. If you are attending and have Vista, please go to https://www.acquia.com/downloads, download the correct version of dev desktop and try to install it. It installs just like any other SW so you shouldn't have a problem. If it won't install successfully, please borrow another computer or signup for a hosted solution or ... maybe consider taking your name off the list. So sorry :-( ... but we don't have control over the dev desktop solution.

i installed the same software as mentioned above in my vista machine, but i am getting error of unable to load dynamic library-aqcuia-drupal\php5_3\ext\php_pdo_sqlserv_53_ts.dll, do i need to install these dll files first, and other question is what is the risk of using work computer is it risky in terms of network and stuff

No security risks that I know of: I think it only makes the local web server available to the local machine. You may need to do some searching to find information on fixing the problem you're having, but it may not be possible to get it running on Vista. If that fails, you might be able to install XAMPP to provide a web server, but keep in mind that Cindy will be leading the class and probably won't have time to work with any one person on issues on their machine.

I asked the same question last month. There hasn't been a reply, so its probably safe to assume that the answer is no. However, I hope that I'm wrong.

Hi everyone who has said you are attending tomorrow evening. We have a huge wait list. Please, please, please consider the following:
    1. If you know Drupal already, please take your name off the list.
    2. Please make sure you have a computer that allows you to install Acquia's dev desktop - it turns your computer into a local web server.
    3. Make sure you have transportation lined up. The location is not in convenient walking distance from the Vienna metro. AND remember rush hour. You will be traveling in northern Virginia's rush hour so please allow time to travel.
    4. Check your calendar, family, etc to ensure that no one is expecting your time tomorrow evening. If you are busy, please let someone else attend.
    5. Please download the pdf at http://www.dzone.com/links/r/getting_started_with_drupal_7.html and put it on the computer you will bring with you.
    6. Please remember this is a facilitated training event. We will start on time so pls arrive a few minutes before 6:00
    THANKS!

Quick reminder for those who are RSVPep: this is a *beginner* class. If you are not a beginner (and I know some of you aren't), please change your RSVP to No so that someone from the waiting list can attend. Thanks!

Before you come to class, consider downloading (and printing if you want) the new free Drupal 7 reference card at http://refcardz.dzone.com/refcardz/getting-started-drupal

So, people on waiting list are not allowed to attend the meeting at all?or is there any consideration to it?

    October 28, 2012

      A former member

As Cindy said, there is limited space at the venue. That's why there's a wait list: if confirmed attendees can't make it and change their RSVP to no, their slot will open up and the next person on the wait list will be added automatically.
