  • Design Systems Community March Meetup (Remote) hosted by DSCC Berlin

    It's time for another Design Systems Community Meetup of the Berlin Chapter! We are excited to run an amazing GitHub-flavoured event this time.

    SYSTEM FOR HUMANS - PRACTICES TO ENCOURAGE ADOPTION, COLLABORATION, AND CONTRIBUTION
    Ash Guillaume, Systems Designer at GitHub

    "Design systems go beyond component libraries and guidelines, they also include the team that utilizes the system resources on a daily basis. I want to share how my team and I have created a collaborative and safe environment for designers to work smarter and be happier when using our design system."

    --
    THE ART OF BEING REPLACEABLE IN DESIGN SYSTEMS
    Au, Senior Systems Designer at GitHub

    Using principles of systems theory, design principles and design culture best practices I want to demonstrate that great design systems can be timeless. That they can scale and take on any challenges the future may hold. This is a talk about design culture and soft skill but with a focus on practical examples of how that translates into design decisions and methods.

    The meetup is remote and hosted by the Design System Community Chapter Berlin!

    We're looking forward to seeing you!

  • Designing for Development & Communicating Design Systems (hosted by DSCC Berlin)

    On the 15th of July its time for another Design Systems Community Meetup of the Berlin Chapter!

    We're hyped to have 2 inspirational talks by Viktoriia Leontieva and Patrycja Rozmus.

    Communicating design systems - Viktoriia Leontieva (Senior product designer at Github)

    On the surface, a design system is a collection of design tokens: color, layout, typography, iconography, etc. but behind each is a series of decisions that shape its current form. The result is a reflection of your team’s ability to arrive at a simple, single answer in conversations with maintainers and users. This talk is informed by a series of interviews with system designers to get to the bottom of why, and how, communicating your design system is the key to its success.

    Designing for Development, building a Design System at Brainly - Patrycja Rozmus (Design system lead at Brainly)

    In this talk, Patrycja will introduce the history of the design system and design processes at Brainly, explain the genesis of their homemade design system tooling that became popular worldwide - Html-Sketchapp. She will also dive into the struggles connected to selling design systems to business and present some takeaways that might be useful for other teams.

    The meetup is remote and hosted by the Design System Community Chapter Berlin!

    We're looking forward to seeing you!

    Talk #1: How Content Graduated From Voice Guidelines to Patterns and Systems
    Ryan Bigge, Senior Content Strategist , Shopify

    We started with voice and tone guides for copywriters. Then content design patterns emerged. Today, many design systems have embedded content guidelines for each component. Drawing on personal experience, Ryan will discuss how his work as a product content strategist has been shaped by Polaris, Shopify’s design system.

    About Ryan
    Ryan Bigge is a senior content strategist on Shopify’s Financial Services team. He spent a decade as a freelance print journalist before going digital. Ryan has talked about about boring UX in Pittsburgh (Abstractions 2019) and improving personalized recommendations in Chicago (IA Summit 2018).

    --
    Talk #2: Content for Design Systems: Measuring Success
    Jacqui Clydesdale, UX Writer and Content Strategist

    “What does success look like?” is something we often ask of content, and the answer can be pretty straightforward for a marketing email or an onboarding flow. But what makes for a good metric for the content in a design system? Drawing on her experience in UX and adult language learning, Jacqui will explore who the users of a design system are, what they need from it, and how writers can develop, test and iterate content to meet everyone’s needs.

    About Jacqui
    Jacqui Clydesdale is a UX writer and content strategist in Toronto. She has a background in linguistics, English literature and second language teaching, so it’s pretty clear that she loves words. Over the past eight years, she’s developed digital content for Kobo, Canadian Tire, Fast Retailing (Uniqlo), Dick’s Sporting Goods, Shaw, and several startups. She’s agnostic when it comes to the Oxford comma.

  • Berlin Design Systems Coalition

    Onefootball GmbH

    We’re more than thrilled to launch the first Design Systems Coalition meetup in Berlin. The evening is hosted and sponsored by our beloved friends over at Onefootball. We’ll have two lightning talks followed by a Q&A and open floor discussion.

    18:30 Open doors / Snacks & Drinks
    19:00 Welcome to Design Systems Coalition Berlin
    19:10 Company introduction Onefootball
    19:20 Talk: Amin Al Hazwani – Design tokens at Firefox
    19:40 Talk: Roland Lösslein – Handoffs with a design system in mind
    20:00 Open Q&A
    20:30 Snacks & Drinks

    ===========================

    Here's our speaker lineup:

    Amin Al Hazwani: Design tokens at Firefox

    Amin Al Hazwani is a Designer at Firefox. Based in Berlin, he is currently working on the Photon Design System. He is also a columnist for A List Apart. Former Professor in Web and Media Design at the Free University of Bolzano, Italy, he taught at the MA in Eco-Social Design. From 2009–16 he ran a one-man studio from Italy, specialized in design for screen. Clients included Google, Accurat, Unibz, Studio Mut, and more.

    In his talk he is going to talk about design tokens. A design token is an abstraction of a visual property such as color, font, width, animation, and so on. These raw values are language application agnostic and once transformed and formatted can be used on any platform. In today's lighting talk we are going to understand how we use such approach at Firefox and how it helps distributing a design system across people and products.

    ===========================

    Roland Lösslein: Handoffs with a design system in mind

    Roland is leading "Design Systems and Tooling" at ResearchGate, an open science platform with more than 14 million researchers registered.

    Two years ago ResearchGate established a design system to gain a consistent user experience across their products. But with its introduction it became much more complicated to handoff designs to engineering including all design system relevant information. For existing design handoff tools the design systems abstractions and underlying principles are unknown and can only be interpreted to a certain extend.

    In his talk Roland will give you insights on ResearchGate’s design system architecture and their solution to create design handoffs that empower a frictionless design to engineering workflow.

    ===========================

    We’re looking forward to see you there 🙌

    Emanuela, Amin, Tim & Roland

    ===========================

    We're constantly looking for new talks. You've something interesting to share with us? Great, fill out the form and we'll reach out to you! https://goo.gl/forms/U5A3HUXUrm3nLS8q2
