Val-Wanda-Lance' Enchantment Trip Follow-Up

Wanda-Lance’s Enchantment Trip Follow up:

I talked to Lance, Mark and Wanda. Here is what I learned:

1: There was a Gear List: This means MINIMUM and MAXIMUM and next time, packs will be scaled! No Extras!

    >>>Keep spare weight carrying capacity within the group! If people get weak, or hurt themselves, you will need that extra capacity!!!

2: Know your knots! It is unbelievable that this is still an issue! It would also help to “Standardize” rope/belay procedures within Peaks.

   >>>We Leapfrog belays, Clip in loose, running belay, etc… Also, 30ft 8mm ropes come in handy for small steep spots.

3: If you camp together, you will know what others will do, and not have to wait for them.

    >>>Stay one group, camping or hiking!

4: Have enough non-cook food with you. Plan cooking for breakfast and dinner, but not for lunch to burn daylight!

   >>>During the day, have enough cold snacks, sausage, bread, candy bars etc….

   >>>Drink Gatorade and have Gatorade powder with you make more every day. Water is bad for multi day hikes !

   >>>Use Glucose Tablets for Emergency Energy every hour. Don’t have too much food either, or extra heavy stuff.

5: Follow leader’s instruction and stick together.

    >>>If you don’t know the reason for some decisions, ask! After discussion, follow and support the leader.

    >>>Co-organizers on a trip should synch up with leader to manage the group more effectively.

    >>>If you have disagreements on a trip, talk it out in camp, rather than letting it simmer.

    >>>Let everybody know what to expect for the rest of the day, so nobody is surprised.

From my own observation, it was necessary to hurry after Dragontail, because the objective was to get off the high plateau and down the steep section before another snowstorm, or nightfall. Despite some hardship, this was accomplished. I am glad Lance led the trip, kept everybody roped up, got them to the summit and back down to Snow Lake, despite questionable weather. Great accomplishment for everybody!

This Note it to learn for future trips, so we all play safe and come home happy!
