Photo Walk: Christmas Lights

A Guided Christmas Lights Walk

On tonight's private guided-walk, led by Joanna - a qualified City of Westminster Walking Tour Guide - you'll get to discover and capture some of the best Christmas lights in Central London.

It is a combi walk of local highlights and some photography, so they might not be as much time for photography as there normally would be on the walks I lead by myself.

There will be various stops:

Local Highlights

In these stops, Joanna will talk about the local history and highlights generally around a food/drink theme. These stops will be a chance for quick snapshots and the stories you hear will help inform you about the area and your future photos.

Xmas Decorations

There will be a few extra stops which will be purely for you to spend time taking photos of the decorations. The lights are mainly in the back streets so away from the crowds. These stops will be longer than the ones above to give you enough time to practice getting the photo you want.

Don't Forget!

It is your responsibility to keep up the group. I'd recommend using this walk as a recce. Get to know where the best lights are, be inspired, hear stories, use your camera to record some 'sketches' and then come back another time with your tripod to take serious shots, if that's what you really want, when you will have time to be really creative.

Dress warm: hats, scarfs, mittens, umbrella!

Photography Equipment

I think most shots will be OK hand-holding the camera because the lights will be so bright. Tripods might be useful, however using one will slow you down and it will be your responsibility to keep up the guide and keep together as a group.

Please don't go wandering off or spending a long time on a photo at the local history stops.

I won't be taking my tripod, but instead my 50mm which has wide aperture of f2.5 and will use the camera's ISO to let in more light if needed.

The walk starts in a hidden away Sam Smiths pub in Soho (with a bar billiards table) and takes in one of the most famous back streets in London, before meandering through another back street which was the location for a 1970s album cover.

On we go past some of London's poshest shops (and the best decorations in my opinion), through another hidden passage, past some more striking decorations before finishing in a pub with a fire and mulled wine!

It starts near Piccadilly Circus and finishes near Marble Arch and lasts approximately 1.5 hours.

This walk is £10 which goes directly to the tour guide, Joanna. It is a private tour open to Photo School members only.
