What we're about

East Sussex Speakers is a group of public speaking clubs (Eastbourne, Lewes, Battle, also Brighton&Hove) that currently meets online and aims to help you speak confidently.

Do you want to improve your communication skills? Do you want to speak well in front of an audience whether online or face to face? Do you think fear is holding you back?

Our aim is to encourage people to not only speak confidently in public, but to also have the opportunity to develop their skills in front of an audience or a group, be this speaking, a leadership role or impromptu speaking.

We are an active and growing club with over 25 members from all walks of life and of all ages. The average meeting has around 20 people who come, a mixture of members and a few guests.

• Are you unemployed, employed, an employer, an entrepreneur or someone looking to succeed at an interview or project?

• Receive positive feedback for personal growth?

• Want to make your presentations and speeches more impactful?

• Do you need to write a speech for a special occasion?

• Learn how to communicate better?

• Expand your network?

• Get out and meet new people?

• Have fun?

If so, then East Sussex Speakers Club is for you. Members have joined for a variety of reasons.

We are part of Toastmasters International which is dedicated to teaching people better public speaking, communication and leadership skills to help them reach their potential and excel in all parts of their lives. Members pay a small six-monthly fee for membership.

We welcome guests to our meetings so that you can see what it's like before you join.

WHAT HAPPENS IN OUR MEETINGS
We devote the first half of the meeting to prepared speeches. Members sign up in advance to write and rehearse a short speech before delivering it to the audience.

The second half of the meeting begins with a series of evaluations. Every prepared speaker in the first half receives constructive feedback and advice on improving their speeches from other members.

We then have a go at delivering impromptu speeches in a section called Table Topics. Guests will get a taste of public speaking by joining us in Table Topics. This is a fun and popular segment that challenges you to think on your feet and get used to speaking off-the-cuff to an audience. We will invite attendees to take part by talking about a given topic for up to two minutes.

Impromptu speaking can be scary for newcomers, but it’s something you’ll want to keep coming back to time and time again!

AGENDA HIGHLIGHTS
- Warm-up introductions for guests and members
- Speeches or workshops delivered by our members
- Feedback on speeches from evaluators
