Rainbow & Madley Lake - Hike

  • Aug 26, 2012 · 7:00 AM
  • This location is shown only to members

Rainbow Lake is a beautiful hike with a gradual ascent, followed by a venture into alpine meadows, across a creek, & up over towards Madley Lake.

***Depending how ambitious the group is feeling, there is also the option of veering off and heading up towards Rainbow Mt. but that is more than double the elevation gain (1700+ metres) & may exceed the time we have allotted for this particular hike, though the views from the top look spectacular! That is a decision we can make as a group, however.

***Please Note: This hike is weather dependent. In the event of unfavorable conditions, I will cancel this event, so please check this site the morning of the hike!

Hiking Details:

Region: Whistler region

Difficulty: Intermediate

Pace: Moderate and steady

Estimated Time: 6 hrs. +/- (Depends on pace of group)

Trail Distance: Est. 18-20 km. +/- (Return from Madley Lake)

Elevation Gain: 825 m. +/-

Trail Details:

For more information on Rainbow Lake please refer to the link provided here.

REMINDER! What to Bring:

  1. Hiking Boots
  2. Poles (*Recommended)
  3. Light Wind-resistent Jacket
  4. Light, Layered Clothing (*Quick dry recommended)
  5. Hat / Sunglasses
  6. Water (*2-3 Litres)
  7. Food (*Lunch, fruit, trailmix etc)
  8. First aid
  9. Sunscreen
  10. Insect repellent
  11. Change of clothing (*for after the hike)
  12. Camera (*optional)
  13. 10 Essentials

Directions:

Follow Hwy. 99 en route to Whistler. At the last set of lights (just past the community center leading into Alpine - small store on corner, if you drive past Green lake, or the intersection to Emerald, you have gone too far), turn left and then left again at the first stop sign. Straight though another stop sign, and keep driving till you see the sign for the trail (5-10 minutes from lights).

Carpooling:

In consideration of the environment, the limited parking available, and the high cost of fuel, it is recommended that we carpool whenever possible. While the group does not endorse any formal policy, it is typically suggested that passengers offer the driver $5.00 per half hour of driving (includes mileage and vehicle wear & tear). However, private arrangements between passenger(s) and driver may be made ahead of time. Please note in your RSVP whether you can offer a ride or need a ride, and where you will be coming from. Passengers, please ensure you show up on time and bring an extra bag for wet/muddy footwear and clothing.

Please do not leave carpooling arrangements until the last minute. The organizer is not responsible for arranging carpooling opportunities on your behalf - that is strictly the responsibility of every individual member. Thank you for your understanding and cooperation.

A really nice hike to the lake with a great group - really glad I was able to come. The hike beyond the lake through the meadows and up to the ridge was a great addition - the views were amazing, and perfect weather for it. Thanks Brenda for organizing.

Thank you everyone for coming out! So wonderful to see old friends! :-) Weather cooperated which enabled some of us to continue on up along the ridge above "Hanging Lake" (Not Madley! :)) Lots of fun exploring! A wonderful day all around! :-)

The trail up to the lake is soso - lots of boardwalks - but going beyond the lake through the flowery meadows up to the ridge between Rainbow and Hanging Lakes is special; I loved it (again). Thank you Brenda, I wish we could have hung out together longer, but I was really glad to be home before dark!

Thanks Brenda for organizing the hike. I wish I wasn't already so tired from my hike the previous day.

Yes, Herbert, I will keep an eye open for an ice axe but I would be very surprised if it was just sitting there in plain view. Likely it is gone, I'm, afraid.

Thanks for your interest in the hike Beejal. Unfortunately, I have already extended the group limit by 2 and do not wish to increase it further. I hope you will consider joining us on future hikes, however. Thanks for understanding.

Brenda, if you find an ice axe near Rainbow Mtn, please pick it up for me. It belongs to another Ecospirit member; he accidentally left it there last year.

    Thx.

Hi Brenda, I look forward to doing this hike again with you; I will however be content to stay in the meadows while you climb Rainbow Mountain!
