Let's go up Arthur’s Seat on a Sunday...

  • Sep 8, 2013 · 11:00 AM
  • This location is shown only to members

Invigorate yourself with an extended walk up and around Edinburgh’s finest extinct volcano.
A reasonable level of fitness is required and you should be prepared for more challenging routes. You'll need proper walking shoes as it can be muddy and slippery.  Due to Edinburgh's notoriously changeable weather a weatherproof jacket is also advised.

Walkers are responsible for their own safety, and no member or organizer from the group can be held responsible in case of any mishap.

By signing up for this walk you are understood to have agreed to these terms.

Walk Details

Distance: estimated 5 km (3 miles)

Total Ascent: estimated 400 meters

Approximate duration, including breaks: 2 hours

Meet me at the the black information kiosk in the Holyrood carpark (close to the Palace and opposite the crags). Leaving at 11.10AM, returning to the kiosk. The exact route will be chosen on the day and we'll walk for roughly two hours.  Weather permitting, we'll take in a full 360 degree panorama of Lothian and beyond, including unparalleled views of the city from many vantage points en-route.

Getting there

It's a short walk from bus stops at the east end of Princess Street or on North Bridge, which are served by most Lothian Buses. Lothian buses 35 stops at the foot of the Royal Mile near the Parliament and Palace.

Facilities & Dogs

There are public toilets at the education centre to the east of the park.  Following the walk, I'll be taking a short stroll to Hemma, http://www.bodabar.com/mt-static/hemma.html for a drink or two and possibly a bite to eat; you're welcome to join me.

Dogs are welcome on this walk and in the pub, but must be kept under control at all times and on a short lead as required. Flexible and long leads are a trip hazard and therefore not permitted.

I would like to come. I am visiting Edinburgh (from US) and joined the group to get to walk with a group! Can you give me a more specific instruction of where we are to meet? Re shoes: Will those rubber rain boots do? I will not have real walking boots.

Hi I"ll be at Waverly Station I am wearing a very bright red gortex jacket in case it rains! Decided on these really nice tennis/walking shoes that may give me more stability I am taking a bus
If you don't see me just go it means that I probably screwed up on the buses and will try again! I may have a phone with me if I do I will post it tonight later on

Hello, I am excited about this Sunday's walk and just want to know whether the meeting place is the exact location arrow marked in the map? When I google the location, the google map shows somewhere else! Could you please confirm to me maybe the postcode? I am very new to the area.
    Thanks and Regards,
    Lourdes

    • Allan

Yes, the green arrow is exactly where we meet. If it's easier for you Amanda & Marguerite will meet at Waverley Bridge at 10:30. Please see their comments. I also walk past this way and will hopefully time it so I meet them there too.

  • John

Fair enough Allan, thanks for the reply.
Enjoy the climb and view. Best wishes, John.

Hi, I have respiratory problems and would love to be able
to do this walk but cannot unfortunately as I find sharp inclines very difficult. And with Gentle jaunts
being suspended temporarily, can't you organise something less
demanding. Just thought I'd ask the question. Best wishes John.

    September 3, 2013

    • Allan

Hi John, sorry to hear that you're missing out on getting a walk. Regrettably, Arthur's Seat for me is 'something less demanding' although some of my guests may disagree with that. Although there's nothing suitable for you in our current schedule, the group do some strolls from time to time. As we are all unpaid volunteers, it's up to individual organisers to choose what type of events they host and when, so I can't offer any future dates but keep an eye on this page or your emails and hopefully something will come up soon.

Marguerite, I am coming to the walk from West Lothian and I too am unsure about how to get to this car park. I have been in that area once before but cant really remember the directions. If you want to meet me at the Waverly Train Station on the morning of the walk say 10.30am and we could share a cab down or try to walk down together?

Hi Amanda, Would love to do that. I am arriving in Edinburgh on the 7th. Have you been on these walks? What kind of shoes? I am worried as I am coming with a small suit case...no room for hiking shoes!
