A vigorous walk up and around Edinburgh’s finest extinct volcano.
A reasonable level of fitness is required and you should be prepared for the more challenging routes. You'll need walking shoes as it can be muddy and slippery, as well as a weatherproof jacket.
Probably no baked treats at the summit at all :(
Approx distance: 5 km (3-4 miles)
Total ascent: 400 meters
Approximate duration, including breaks: 2 hours
Meet me at the the black information kiosk in the Holyrood carpark (close to the Palace and opposite the crags). Leaving at 2.10pm, returning to the kiosk. The exact route will be chosen on the day and we'll walk for up to two hours. Weather permitting, we'll take in a full 360 degree panorama of Lothian and beyond, including unparalleled views of the city from many vantage points en-route.
After the walk, we'll be taking a short stroll to Hemma (http://www.bodabar.com/mt-static/hemma.html) cafe-bar for refreshments.
It's a short walk from bus stops at the east end of Princes Street or on North Bridge, which are served by most Lothian Buses. Services 35 and 36 stop at the foot of the Royal Mile near the Parliament and Palace.
You're welcome to bring your dog on this walk, provided you also bring a short lead. Bringing your dog commits you to follow the Scottish Outdoor Access Code (http://www.snh.gov.uk/docs/A309336.pdf) Part 3, Section 5 along with any request from the organiser to leash your dog. It's further requested that dogs be settled or on a short lead during any refreshment breaks.
