I wanted to send you all a note to thank you for joining our group. I'm really excited about the possibilities of bringing together educators and entrepreneurs to help improve education in our schools. I wanted to give you an overview of what I hope our meetups will look like and also take suggestions and get some help from our new members.
First of all, I am new to the Austin area, having just moved here from Denver, CO. Meredith Ely, the co-founder of this meetup, also helped set up the first Ed-Tech meetup in San Francisco and also the one that I attended in Denver/Boulder. The format for the meetup there was really cool and I think it will serve as a great starting point for our meetup in Austin.
The basic format for this meetup is something like this: 1). Developers and entrepreneurs (or anybody with a great idea, for that matter) can present to our group to talk about that idea for about 5 minutes. 2.) Educators who have a need in their school or classroom that they feel could or should be developed can discuss such a need. Also, educators are welcomed to share tools or technologies that they enjoy, showing the practical application of those tools. 3.) Audience members (and presenters) are encouraged to give thoughtful feedback during a brief Q&A segment following each presentation. 4.) Everybody is encouraged to drink adult beverages, provided by our generous sponsors, throughout the above proceedings (trust me, this will be helpful to everyone involved).
I'm still waiting to hear back about the venue but I anticipate our first meetup will take place in the next month or so. I will set a firm date once we have our venue nailed down. If any members know of a business that would be willing to sponsor our meetup to help us provide drinks and snacks for everyone, please feel free to contact me. I would be happy to give them name mention, hand out business cards, etc. to make it worth their contribution.
Our first meeting will likely be a meet and greet and we will also hold a discussion about the format and I will be starting a list of presenters for our first official meetup.
Thanks again and welcome to our group!
