I was a member back when the Friends was first formed, but let my membership lapse many years ago. I suppose it's time for me to join again... I'm not familiar with what the society has been doing in the past 15 years or so.
Hundreds of times, at all times of year, all kinds of weather, almost all times of day or night, on all trails (and some that aren't on the map).
I have always been interested in the management of the park - ungulates, swans, beavers, controlled burns, etc. If possible, I would really love to learn more, through presentations, and maybe even being able to witness management activities in action, such as bison round-ups, swan and/or pelican and/or raptor monitoring/banding/introduction, etc. I like to go hiking, skiing, snowshoeing, and canoeing alone or with only a few companions. Group activities would be most attractive to me if they had a focus (like plant, invertebrate, bird or wildlife identification, inventory, or photography) and one or more experts to learn from. I would also like to help out with any projects that the Friends might be engaged in.
I first visited Elk Island on my honeymoon in 1972, moved to Edmonton in 1975, and have spent many days in the park every year since: Christmas bird counts, hikes and skis on every trail in the park, canoe trips, special events. My favourite place!
