Love in the Time of Cholera, Gabriel Garcia Marquez (Nobel, 1982)
From of the best writers of the 20th century and one of the best ever in Spanish, comes one of his most well known and loved books, 'Love in the time of Cholera'. An epic work from an epic writer, it weighs in at over a quarter of a kilo or 368pp. Set in an unnamed town in Columbia and written originally in Spanish, Marquez in 'Love in the Time of Cholera' explores themes of love as a sickness. Everyone at tonight's book-club that had read it had fond memories and were happy to read it again. The New York Times called it "radiant" and said it was "elegantly fashioned out of the clockwork pieces of romantic fiction (secret love letters, unrequited passions, noisy declarations of undying devotion and long, melancholy honeymoons spent at sea)" (Jyoti, I think you'll find something to like there). But also said it was about all types of love. Since starting this book club a couple of years ago we have formed a nice core membership. If you haven't come yet, please look out for the books on the table, pull up a chair, order a wine and join us. We like to hear what everyone has to say and enjoy the conversation, we're not cliquey at all! Oh, and to defray the Meetup monthly bill I will accept gold coin contributions or wine if you want to pay for multiple in one hit. I hope to see everyone again at this one with some new faces.

What we're about

We will be reading and discussing Man Booker and Noble Prize for Literature winning authors monthly over a nice glass of something, somewhere in North Fitzroy or walking distance from there. Our first meeting will be at Tramway Hotel which is relatively quiet and has good beer and wine selections at reasonable prices. The first book will be Siddhartha by Hermann Hesse (Nobel Prize winner 1946). We can choose the next book from two lists of winners. I'm starting with a short one so people have time to join and read the book! I want it to be an inclusive and interesting discussion where everyone gets a say and everyone is welcome.
