What we'll do
On Saturday, November 17th, the Busara center for Behavioral Economics invites you to our first annual year-end data science hackathon
For our inaugural challenge, teams will have opportunity to compete for Ksh 50,000 in prize money by solving a straightforward prediction problem based on our of our research projects.
In 2016, the World Health Organization estimated that 1.3 million Kenyans suffered from major depressive disorder (MDD), popularly known as depression. However, with only 1 certified psychiatrist per 500,000 people, according to the Africa Mental Health Foundation, resources to treat this population are scarce. This problem is compounded by widespread stigma and misperceptions about mental health issues. Across the continent, the picture is similarly bleak: sub-Saharan Africa is the region with the highest prevalence of untreated depression, according to the Global Burden of Disease project.
Might data science be able to help address this issue? If at-risk individuals could be better targeted, perhaps Africa's scarce resources could go a lot further. On November 17th, we aim to find out. Participants will be challenged to create models that predict depression from demographic, social and economic data using a unique data set collected by the Busara Center.
We are hosting this event in partnership with Zindi Africa, AI Kenya and the Kenya chapter of Women in Data Science. The challenge will be released on the Zindi portal on the day of the event.
