The Brothers Karamazov by Fyodor Dostoevsky
The Brothers Karamazov, also translated as The Karamazov Brothers, is the final novel by the Russian author Fyodor Dostoevsky. Dostoevsky spent nearly two years writing The Brothers Karamazov, which was published as a serial in The Russian Messenger from January 1879 to November 1880. Dostoevsky died less than four months after its publication. The Brothers Karamazov is a passionate philosophical novel set in 19th-century Russia, that enters deeply into the ethical debates of God, free will, and morality. It is a spiritual drama of moral struggles concerning faith, doubt, judgment, and reason, set against a modernizing Russia, with a plot which revolves around the subject of patricide. Dostoevsky composed much of the novel in Staraya Russa, which inspired the main setting. Since its publication, it has been acclaimed as one of the supreme achievements in world literature.

    What we're about

We're a society for classical literature enthusiasts, keen to discuss literary works which have not only stood the test of time, but are both brilliant and thought provoking.

The Melbourne Literary Classics Society allows members the opportunity to explore classical literature in a laid back and approachable manner. Our meetups are set in informal cafes which encourage free flowing discussion in a welcoming environment. Since literary classics are often regarded as impenetrable, dry or overly intellectual, we hope to dispel this myth by choosing books which are both accessible and enjoyable- as most classics indeed are!

New books will be listed according to our own choices and members' requests. Meetings will be held in various cafés in the Melbourne metro area on the third Sunday of each month in the late morning. Occasional special one-off meetup will be announced from time to time based on members' requests.
