Is your podcast there to promote your business idea or cause, or is it a vehicle through which you can discover and shape it? In this session Lachlan Samuel (host of the Open Up Podcast) and Bryn Edwards (host of the WA Real Podcast) speak about how they have both created podcasts initially as a vehicle to follow their curiosity, connect more deeply to those around them and add more meaning to their lives. However, it is though being consistent, refining their podcasting craft and reflecting across many many stories that Lachlan and Bryn now understand their area of impact at a much deeper level which is yielding marketable and commercial opportunities. There are key lessons here about longevity in podcasting and discovering unexpected gems along the way. If you want to add more depth to the human element of connection that podcasting brings, and build a podcast that lasts, this is for you. About Lachlan Lachlan Samuel is the host of the Open Up Podcast (https://www.openuppodcast.com), the show Making Mental Health Mainstream, through the sharing of deeply vulnerable stories, where our guests overcome seemingly insurmountable adversity. Lachlan is an ex FIFO worker, who whilst working away, had a partner who suffered with depression and attempted to take her own life. As a result, he also experienced depression and was ultimately forced to resign. Later, he too attempted to take his own life, lost a friend to suicide & upon return to FIFO, was evacuated for being suicidal. Lachlan started the Open Up Podcast as a means of helping those like him. Those that felt alone and misunderstood. Through consistency, the podcast has lead to many opportunities, including speaking, becoming a brand ambassador, weekly sponsorship and most recently, played a major role in securing Open Ups first contract to provide mental health workshops to oil and gas FIFO workers. *A second major contract is in its final stages. About Bryn Former Management Consultant armed with a Masters in Business Psychology, Bryn from an early age knew there were easier ways to navigate life and was a sponge for life lessons and wisdom. Following a number of epiphanies and life events, in 2017 Bryn decided to pursue the oldest form of learning – that being listening and learning from those around you who have ‘been there and done it’ – and created WA Real podcast (https://wareal.com.au), which features long-form conversations that deep dive into the real stories of some of the most fascinating and inspiring people in WA to unearth ‘golden life nuggets’. Their stories aren’t the glossy manicured ‘feel good’ stories that are served up on mainstream media; they are the real stories full of human complexity and contradiction that you can connect to and learn from. WA Real has been consistently sharing over 110 stories every Monday morning from over 2 years. Calling all startup founders! On the first Wednesday of each month, let's get together for a tasty beverage or two, celebrate and/or commiserate the month that was, and share plans and ideas for the month yet to be! You might even meet your future Co-founder, Lead Programmer, or Chief Ninja of Ideation and Crypto Research. As Elon Musk could have once said, "All my success is due to drinking with other startup founders as often as possible". This is a very casual, monthly, after-work event, in addition to our fortnightly Morning Startup meetups at Spacecubed. So if you're not a morning person, this is for you! There will be no speakers or formalities. Just a bunch of startups, in a pub, having fun, and learning from each other. We may or may not have sponsors, so make sure you save up ahead of time to cover the cost of your own exotic cocktails and Perth-priced-drinks. (If your company is interested in putting on a bar tab or buying a pizza or two, in exchange for exposure to the Perth Startup Community through our extensive member list, let's talk! [masked] ) To find us, ask the bar staff for the Founder Sundowner table and they'll point you in the right direction. Look forward to seeing you there!
Pitch Practice is on again! We're giving you, the upcoming new startups of Perth, a chance to practice your pitch in front of the non-intimidating and supportive Morning Startup audience. Why pitch? Because communicating what your startup is about is an essential skill that only gets better with practice. Every pitch will teach you something about the way you tell your story, allowing you to refine it so it has an even bigger impact on the next audience. This is a great opportunity to get some practice under your belt in a casual, friendly atmosphere. The plan: Each startup gets three minutes to pitch and two minutes to answer questions from the audience. You'll be clapped out as soon as the 3-minute mark is reached. Only three minutes? WTF?! Yeah, that's right. Three minutes prevents waffling, keeps the audience listening, and gives more people the opportunity to have a go! You need a short, succinct pitch that clearly communicates: 1. The problem you're solving. 2. Who the customer is. 3. Why your startup is unique. 4. Can it be copied? Does it stand out? Is it interesting in some way? 5. The market opportunity. 6. How you are going to market/sell. 7. Call to action. Are you looking for investment, co-founders, talent, advice? Register to pitch If you're interested in pitching, email us at [masked]. Include your contact details and a quick description of your startup and we'll be in touch with further details. If you're reading this thinking "I should do it, but it's totally out of my comfort zone", then email us now ([masked]) before you give yourself another excuse not to. You won't regret it!
