What we're about

***************WHAT DO WE DO? ****************

The Bay Open Water Swimmers is a "swimming at your own risk" group. We meet up around Port Phillip Bay and various other locations to swim together. We are not a competitive entity. The idea is to swim close together. It’s not a race. A course briefing occurs pre-swim & we always aim to be in the water @ the scheduled swim start time.

****************WHO IS THIS GROUP FOR?*****************

This group is for people who want to swim and socialise together for fun, exercise, and to enjoy the considerable beauty of Port Phillip Bay from the perspective of being in the water. It is not specially designed for racing or for people who need to learn open water swimming techniques.

It is suitable for people who are strong and confident swimmers in the pool and who want to swim in the open water. There are risks involved in open water swimming and to maximise safety and enjoyment for yourself and other participants you should be: >> a strong and confident swimmer (i.e. can do 2 kilometres easily within 45 mins in the pool); >> physically fit and engaging regularly (every week) in some form of vigorous exercise; >> confident swimming freestyle (breaststroke is not usually a strong enough stroke to get through a swell); >>swimming regularly either in the pool or in open water; >>able to swim back to shore by yourself if you decide that you are not confident to continue with the group.

This free to join and no $ charge to attend Meet-up group is operated, organized and managed by a team of swim community volunteers. Any person who has assisted in the organisation of the social swim has done so on a voluntary basis only.

“Each swimmer in this group is attending & swimming at their own Risk”.

Each swimmer and member of these meet-ups events has a personal responsibility to decide whether they swim or not on any particular day, they should only swim if they are completely confident about the condition of the beaches water, ocean and weather they are choosing to swim in as open water and ocean swimming can be a dangerous recreational activity.

All swimmers and members of this meet-up group have a personal responsibility to determine that they have the physical condition to enter into and complete a swim safely without any water safety assistance from other swimmers or the group as a whole.

If a swimmer has any existing medical or physical condition or any doubt as to their ability to complete a swim they should have a medical check-up first with a qualified medical professional.

Swimmers under the age of 18 should only swim if accompanied by a parent, guardian or a person who has parental responsibility for them.

Swimmers should be aware that there are no lifeguards on duty and no water safety provided, nor implied.

Swimmers should also be aware there is no insurance in the event of sustaining injury etc.

If you choose to swim at any other time or any other route be it with this meet-up group or friends you have made through this group, all the same as above applies.

By becoming and being a member of this meet-up group by your login to the Homepage you are acknowledging and agreeing to all of these terms and conditions.
