What we're about

Southern Storm Paddling Club is primarily a Dragon Boat club based in the Melbourne Docklands on Victoria Harbour. Dragon Boating is a team sport with up to 22 people in a boat so it's more about working together than anything else. (Female teams, male teams and mixed 50/50)

We are a seriously competitive team and are looking for sports minded people who are committed to training hard to achieve results. You don't need experience in the sport to start with us as we will teach you everything you need to know and provide ongoing coaching and training as long as you are prepared to put in the time. Paddling is just about a full body workout where flexibility and timing are more important than strength but you will improve all of those areas.

We train on Saturday mornings at 8.30am and 6pm Tuesday nights about 46 weeks of the year including through winter. From July onwards we add 6pm Thursday as we build to the Championships in March. There are Sunday regattas about every 3 weeks along the way and then National Competitions interstate in March.

While we do have some experienced members with many years under their belt many others of our team are in their first or second season and haven't forgotten how it was that first time! We have a great range of ages, a fantastic mix of nationalities and cultures and a great supporting team spirit! Once we're all dressed in Green then we're all just one team!

In 2016 we placed 3rd overall in the State Championships and we are aiming higher! We will ease you into the sport but we are looking for commitment to fitness, time, teamwork and our training schedule.

In 2019 the State Championships will be at Lake Nagambie,Central Victoria in February and the Nationals a month later in Canberra. Then later in the year we get various invitations to compete overseas around the world with our members having competed in Canada, Hong Kong and Japan.

You can come out with us for 3 sessions to see how you like the sport before committing to membership and getting that green racing shirt and become a "Stormie"! Come and join us for a unique experience. You'll love the view from the water!
