This October Startup Victoria is partnering with Giant Leap to find impact startups who fuse profit with purpose.

Calling all impact founders!

As the social and environmental challenges facing our local communities continue to intensify, we are seeing more consumers demanding ethical products, more employees demanding purposeful work, and more investors realising the financial outperformance of ethical assets.

Over the last 5 years, the percentage of impact startups as a proportion of all funded Australian startups has increased 1.5x from 15% to 23%. That's almost a quarter of all funded startups!

Startup Vic and Giant Leap are excited to shine a spotlight on the founders who are building businesses that are changing the world for the better. If this sounds like you or someone you know, we’d love you to apply!

‘Impact startups’ are commercially minded businesses that have social or environmental good embedded into the business model, such as:

- Who Gives A Crap - Toilet paper subscription service that donates 50% profits to build toilets in the developing world.
- Goterra – A waste management business that diverts organic waste from landfill, feeds it to black soldier flies, and turns flies into sustainable livestock feed.
- Applied – A recruitment platform that removes unconscious bias from the hiring process with behavioural science principles.
- Amber - Moving the world towards renewable energy by providing wholesale prices directly to energy consumers.
- Work180 – A jobs platform showcasing the best workplaces for women and encouraging businesses to do better with gender policies and representation.
- Mindset - Mobile hypnotherapy programs that help people manage and improve their health, without drugs or diets.
- Seer Medical - Creating new clinical care pathways for diagnosing and managing neurological, cardiac and sleep conditions.

Four finalists will be selected from the pool of applicants to pitch on the night to a room of industry professionals, fellow founders and an expert panel of judges. The winner will be the proud recipient of The Startup Vic Prize Package, full of business goodies for you and your startup!

One of the biggest challenges you’ll face as a founder is determining the best way to fund your startup. You’ll need to decide whether to go it alone without the help of outside capital or secure investment from venture capitalists (VCs) who offer funds, expertise, credibility and networks in exchange for equity.

The funding path you choose will greatly affect the way you structure your business operations, how fast you grow, the size of your team and long-term strategy, but what is the best way to determine which option is best for you?

Join us for this expert panel discussion as we unpack the benefits and drawbacks of bootstrapping vs VC investment and share tips about how to determine the best funding route for your startup. We’ll be talking to:

Hugh Stephens - Founder & General Partner @ Galileo Ventures, Founder @ Sked Social
Hannah Yan Field - Partner @ Folklore VC
You can expect to learn about:

The pros and cons of bootstrapping vs VC investment
What it’s like to be a founder funding your own startup
Things to think about when securing venture capital

Startup Vic x One Roof: HerStartup Pitch Night

Online event

This November Startup Vic is excited to partner with One Roof to support startups led by women founders.

It's time for HerStartup!
Building a business can change your life, and the lives of others, but it's an incredibly challenging journey. Some challenges are universal, but for women founders, there are cultural and economic barriers unique to her experience.

Globally, venture investment is at a record high but the share of funding going to women-led companies is falling. For the first eight months of 2021, just 2.2% of all venture funding went to companies with solely women founders. Locally, over the last four years startups founded by women secured 4% of funding and generally banked less than those founded by men.

The need to support women entrepreneurs is not a new conversation, but it is one we need to keep having. Momentum is growing to make Australia one of the best places for women entrepreneurs to succeed.

That's why this November, Startup Vic is partnering with One Roof, Australia's top community for women leaders, to shine a spotlight on the women entrepreneurs who are building the next wave of Aussie startups. If this sounds like you, or someone you know, we'd love you to apply!

Apply now to pitch!
This is an opportunity to get eyeballs on your business and win the support of investors, partners, prospective employees, customers and the broader Startup Vic community.

Previous winners of the HerStartup Pitch Night include The Daily Routine (2020), VerveSuper (2019), and Nanager (2018).

Four finalists will be selected from the pool of applicants to pitch on the night to a room of industry professionals, fellow founders and an expert panel of judges. The winner will be the proud recipient of The Startup Vic Prize Package, full of business goodies for you and your startup! The top six finalists will receive 12 months complimentary One Roof memberships, giving you full access to a fast-growing network and extensive business support thanks to sponsors LUNA, Standard Ledger, and Rampersand.
