  • Generic Sensor API and Progressive Widgets Architecture

Welcome to the most progressive meetup in Sydney. Talk 1. Starts 6:30pm Jessica Claire Edwards presents "Accessing Sensors via the Web: An Introduction to the Generic Sensor API" The Generic Sensor API is a specification that provides browser vendors a framework for implementing APIs accessing hardware features. What does that mean for developers? For the first time, it's possible to play with a whole new range of sensors, such as the accelerometer, gyroscope and magnetometer. Previously, these sensors have been exposed via high level APIs (e.g. Device Motion or Device Orientation APIs), which work great for specific use cases but fall down when you want to use the information in unintended ways. This talk will cover the current state of the Generic Sensor API, the APIs built on top of it, and how you can get started using sensors via the web! Talk 2. Starts 7:15pm Zouhir Chahoud presents "PWA: Progressive Widgets Architecture" How to progressively enhance enterprise CMS with modern JavaScript UI widgets. Building a client side widgets and deploying it as a static file using Preact.

The JavaScript Workers: An Introduction to Web & Service Workers โš™๏ธ ๐Ÿ“ถ By Jessica Edwards (@jsscclr (https://twitter.com/jsscclr)) What is the Service Worker API? How does it enable developers to develop web applications with offline capabilities? To help answer these questions, one should look to its predecessor: the Web Worker API. By understanding what the Web Worker API provides us (and what it doesnโ€™t), we can better understand Service Workers and how to use them. Jessica is a front-end developer at Holler. In her spare time, she helps organise the Node Sydney and Creative Coding Sydney meetup groups. 2. PWA-ifying Google's Santa Tracker for the holiday seasonโ€”working offline and from the ๐Ÿ  ๐Ÿ“ฑ By Google's santaware engineer Sam Thorogood (@samthor (https://twitter.com/samthor)) Santa Tracker (https://santatracker.google.com/village.html) is large interactive web app Google launches every year in December with a bunch of interactive games and educational experiences. Last year the elves (a.k.a Santaware Engineers) worked hard on making it a Progressive Web Appโ€”working offline and launching from your homescreen. And while Santa takes a well-deserved break, the elves work to release Santa Tracker as open-source. A lead Santaware Engineer, who works on the web, Chrome and Santa Tracker at Google Sydney is coming to tell you how to get on Santa's good sideโ€”talking about the PWA, how the elves work together, and to answer all your questions!
