What we're about

What is the best way to celebrate the end of the week? Friday night at the movies! This is a monthly social group for LGBTIQ and allies who would like to get together at the end of the week for light-hearted friendly chats, a bite to eat followed by a movie. Cinema location may vary week-to-week but will be an inner city location.

Singles, couples and friends of all ages are welcome, please RSVP early as group sizes will be limited. This is a chance to celebrate your week, relax with friends and watch a movie. Hope to see you there!

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS:

Q: How often do you meet?
A: We have a re-occuring monthly meetup and ad-hoc meetups in between.

Q: If I've already seen the movie, can I join you for dinner only?
A: Yes - you are more than welcome, as long as there are spaces free.

Q: How does ticketing work, do I purchase my own ticket?
A: Yes - you will need to organise your own ticket for the selected session. In the days prior to the meetup, please ensure you check for updates, as the movie session and seating allocation will be confirmed. We recommend that you book ahead of time to get your preferred seat, but you can also buy tickets at the cinema as well.

Movie discounts are available through Telstra (via login to your account - 'Thanks Movies'),

Q: Can I invite friends?
A: Yes - you are more than welcome to bring a friend with you, please indicate this on your RSVP. If you are a group, please ask each member to RSVP separately, so that we can keep track of numbers. Please do not re-post our meetups to any other meetup groups without permission.

Q: How do you select what movie to watch?
A: We often vote to find the most popular film, but sometimes it can come down to other factors such as the start time. On occasion, we may split into two groups if two popular films are commencing at a similar time.

Q: Do you run other meetups outside of watching a movie?
A: Most of our events involve a movie, but on occasion, we do meet for other events. We welcome all suggestions for future meetups.

Queer Screen Film Festival Opening Night Film: Portrait of a Lady on Fire

Event Cinemas George Street

Join us in supporting the Queer Screen Film Festival. We will be meeting as a group and watching the opening night film: Portrait of a Lady on Fire. Please book your tickets ahead of time (including the party) to ensure you don't miss out! https://tix.queerscreen.org.au/Events/Portrait-of-a-Lady-on-Fire MOVIE DETAILS: Our opening night film is a tour de force 18th-century lesbian romance that celebrates the female gaze like few before it. Marianne (Noémie Merlant), a young painter, has been commissioned to do the wedding portrait of Héloïse (French star Adèle Haenel), a reluctant soon-to-be bride who refuses to sit for her portrait – and must be studied in secret. To fall in love is to study someone deeply and Marianne’s attraction to her subject builds with every brushstroke and stolen glance as they stroll along the cliff tops of Brittany. An intimacy and attraction swiftly develops between the two women that can not be denied, even as circumstances conspire to keep them apart. Portrait of a Lady on Fire is a lush and romantic masterpiece from acclaimed French director Céline Sciamma (Water Lilies MGFF09, Tomboy, Girlhood) that will engross you from the opening moments to the final breathtaking sequence, that will leave you floored. Winner Queer Palm Cannes Film Festival 2019 Winner Best Screenplay Cannes Film Festival 2019 "A masterpiece. A devastatingly unforgettable story of love and memory. As perfect a film as any to have premiered this year. Razor-sharp and shatteringly romantic. A profoundly tender story about the process of self-discovery and becoming." - IndieWire Join us after the screening for the Opening Night after party in the Event Cinemas Gold Lounge.

Queer Screen Film Festival Closing Night Film: Benjamin

Event Cinemas George Street

Join us in supporting the Queer Screen Film Festival. We will be meeting as a group and watching the closing night film: Benjamin at 7pm. We will be meeting for drinks and light snacks nearby from 6pm - details to be advised closer to the date. Please book your tickets ahead of time to ensure you don't miss out! https://tix.queerscreen.org.au/Events/Benjamin/Sun-Sep-22-2019-19-00 MOVIE DETAILS: After an initial attraction, what happens next? https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2X-Z1N4sI2s That’s the dilemma for our socially awkward hero Benjamin (Colin Morgan) in this wry comedy drama. He’s a young indie film director who falls for sweet musician Noah (Phénix Brossard) and tries to pursue a relationship – but he’ll need to do a bit of soul searching along the way. British comedian, actor and TV presenter Simon Amstell writes and directs, surely drawing from his own take on the London cool-kid circuit. Balancing plenty of self-deprecating English wit with moments of tenderness, Benjamin is a cinematic balm for these cynical times. Sydney Premiere "...a miraculously heartfelt love story, sweet and poignant in all its awkwardness" - The Guardian
