What we'll do

There are hundreds of intelligent but readable books that have been recommended and reviewed by Bill Gates on his website: We explore Gates' reading list together and meet monthly in inner Sydney (near public transport) for friendly and thought-provoking chats over drinks. Newbies are welcome, as always!

OUR SEPTEMBER BOOKS ARE 'Homo Deus' and '21 Lessons for the 21st Century', both by Yuval Noah Harari. Yes, for the first time we will have TWO books in a single month! I recommend you get cracking as early as possible with these two. Some great discussions came from our reading of Harari's other book 'Sapiens' in early 2018.

While 'Sapiens' looks at humanity's past, 'Homo Deus' explores our future and '21 Lessons for the 21st Century' gives a framework for understanding the world's challenges.

In his reviews of the books Gates writes, "Harari’s new book is as challenging and readable as Sapiens," and, "Harari is such a stimulating writer that even when I disagreed, I wanted to keep reading and thinking. All three of his books wrestle with some version of the same question: What will give our lives meaning in the decades and centuries ahead? So far, human history has been driven by a desire to live longer, healthier, happier lives. If science is eventually able to give that dream to most people, and large numbers of people no longer need to work in order to feed and clothe everyone, what reason will we have to get up in the morning?"
