Gauranga Full Moon Festival - An Amazing Night!

The Mantra Room is expanding. Our Gauranga Full Moon Festival was too popular an event to fit into our studio on Montague Rd. It’s the first time we’ve had to hire a venue, but the special events we’ve been holding have outgrown the home base and we just can’t squeeze everyone in anymore. So on Sunday night the Colossus Reception Lounge rang with the sounds of kirtan. And why the special event? We were celebrating the birth of Sri Gauranga, who inaugurated the Kirtan movement currently sweeping the world.

It’s a great venue, a huge hall with polished wooden floors, plenty of toilets, ducted air-conditioning and a commercial kitchen. And that’s a real boon when you are serving hundreds of hungry chanters! It even has a mirrored disco ball, which fitted with the lights we strung across the hall.

Around 250 people rocked up to chant, dance and feast. Prahlad and the Chants came up from the Gold Coast to lead the kirtan which started off mellow and gradually built up to a crescendo as people left their seats to fill the dance floor. I heard calls of “Don’t stop now” at the end of the some of the more exuberant numbers, with circles of dancers and congo lines forming and breaking and forming again.

The Gauranga breath meditation was exhilarating. If you get the chance to hear 250 voices joining in unison to chant this powerful transcendental Mantra, my advice is, take it!

Jivananda’s talk, given in her inimitable style, explored the essence of kirtan. Following this Gayatri “talked story” on the life and teachings of Sri Gauranga, complemented by a huge screen projection of images and scenes from Gauranga’s* life.

The evening finished with a traditional Indian dinner, complete with vadas, biryani rice, chickpea curry and all the fancy trimmings, and a mouth watering dessert buffet of Indian sweets. Mmm mmm mmm.

Everyone left with smiling faces, hunger satisfied, both materially and spiritually.

Our next special event will be in September when we join the huge worldwide celebration of Janmastami. We’ll keep you posted!
