What we're about
"Some people feel the rain, others just get wet." Bob Marley
This is not just another hiking/walking group - it's a niche community for like-minded people to come together so I hope you would take your time reading through this page and only apply to join if you feel the group's philosophy resonates with you.
About our community
I've decided to create this group in hopes of meeting others that have also wandered off the beaten path in life. Let's get together and ask the big questions we have about life, share our struggles, our mistakes, our wisdom, make meaningful lasting connections and grow together; all while we wander slowly through urban landscapes, hike/camp into the wild, or do a "smile-inducing" walk (homeless handouts, free hugs or other creative ideas). If this sounds pretty awesome to you so far, please continue on and read the page thoroughly before applying to join.
Since the talking is just as important as the walking, I'd first like to emphasise on the importance of open-mindedness in this group as I sincerely hope this to be a space where pretty much ALL subjects can be openly, respectfully, and freely discussed. So in joining this group you are in agreement that you can show acceptance and non-judgement on whatever it is that is discussed, whether the subject be about politics, religion, vegetarianism or any "sensitive" subjects alike. It's a place to have meaningful conversations without having to always censor ourselves in fear of offending others. Having said that, please ALWAYS be mindful of your emotions, keep the conversations peaceful and friendly, and most importantly, relax and have fun :)
Secondly, I truly believe that all successful relationships/communities are built on a foundation of honesty, openness, and constructive/peaceful communication, and it is no different with this community.
If you don't agree with either points, this may not be the right group for you. If you are still vibing with me, please read on!
This is a community for people who...
are happiness/well-being (not pleasure/material) driven
are open and honest
are open minded and not rigidly tied to any beliefs
cares about logic and reasoning
are not easily offended/affected by others' opinions
are passionate about bettering themselves
prefer to make friends from the inside out and skip the boring bits
are not afraid to challenge the status quo
pushes the boundary of their comfort zone
are socially, environmentally, and morally conscious
Secret Code: "Into The Wild" (required for member approval - read below for instructions)
enjoys walks and/or hikes
have a deep appreciation for nature and the outdoors
I'd like to keep this group to a relatively small size (quality over quantity), so it's important for me to know that you've read all of the above information and tick ALL (yes ALL!) of the boxes from the above list. So that I can filter the people who don't read/fit the group descriptions, please type the "secret code" somewhere/anywhere in the questions page (please don't forget!!). Please also take your time thinking about the questions when applying to join; they don't have to be essays but it should at least be thoughtful (sorry if I sound like the soup-Nazi but I really want to maintain a high quality group). Although this may seem like an one way process, remember that interviews should be mutual, so if you have any questions you'd like to ask, just send me a private message. Now, if you get declined and realised you had done the horrible thing of FORGETTING the secret code!!! It's ok, just breathe and simply send me a message about it :)
There are no rules per se, just love, mutual respect, honesty, openness, and teach instead of preach.
Note: After starting this project I was unfortunately asked to move overseas for work and as a result I will only be in Melbourne a few months in a year. I am still managing this group from overseas and I'd need some help to keep the group active; if you would like to help host some walks/hikes please send me a private message.
Thanks for reading and I look forward to meeting you all :)
