- Jung's Psychology of the Unconscious
"And the rain fell, and the floods came, and the winds blew and beat on that house, but it did not fall, because it had been founded on the rock." - Matthew 7:25 Ways to Self is a series of talks in which we explore the ancient stories, symbols and ideas which form the essential foundation of human personality. To know where we are going we must know from whence we have come. To create a beautiful future we must understand who we are. 'Jung's Psychology of the Unconscious: A Path to Wholeness' is an event which focuses upon laying out the themes central to the thought of perhaps the most important psychologist of the 20th century: Carl Jung. Due to the essential value Jung placed upon the imagination (as the source of guidance, healing and creative intuition) a good way of understanding his ideas is through the exploration of image. After all the root of our word 'imagination' is the Latin "imago" which means "image". We will lay out Jung's vision of individual development through a discussion of the images that correspond to each phase. These images are the figure of the Shadow, the Anima/Animus and the Self. In addition to exploring the meaning of these figures we will discuss their practical relevance to our daily lives. The seminar format will be a visual presentation of images and an associated discussion of their meaning. - Psychology Seminar: Imagination, Symbol, Alchemy and Authenticity
Ways to Self is a psychology seminar series in which we will be uncovering a hidden map of the Soul through an exploration of ancient dreams, myths and symbols. Through his extensive researches in the early 20th century the Swiss psychologist Carl Jung has given us a rich legacy of insight into the development of character. Jung observed in the individuals that he worked with in his therapy practice the unfolding of a natural inner impulse towards a more balanced, healthy and harmonious way of being. This 'inner impulse' manifested itself through the spontaneous play of the imagination in dreams, fantasies and visions which Jung saw as efforts of the Unconscious to convey vitally important messages which serve to 'update' our day-to-day conscious attitude. Thus, through a harmonious relationship between the Unconscious and Consciousness, a more complete, actualized and balanced personality emerges. This 'whole' personality Jung called: the "Self". Our effort in 'Ways to Self' will be to elevate to consciousness the essential nature of the Self through an exploration of the eternal images which repeatedly, and cross-culturally, well up from the deep of the Unconscious in the form of dream, intuition, belief, ritual and art... These seminars may be relevant for anyone with an interest in psychology, spirituality, contemporary film, literature, mythology, philosophy and personal development.
