What we're about
Welcome to Wollemi Wanderers! This group is for canyoners who can abseil confidently. Our trips explore the beautiful canyons around Sydney: Blue Mountains, Wollemi National Park, surrounding areas and beyond, often with overnight camping.
Most of our trips are for people with abseiling experience. We don't teach abseiling because we don't have qualified instructors. If you can't abseil, do a one day course e.g. with Australian School of Mountaineering (Katoomba) or other approved training organisation. For many canyons, you also need to be able to swim. A few canyons require basic rock climbing ability.
For all canyons you generally need to be good at boulder scrambling and walking / scrambling up very steep slopes. The walks in and out of canyons can be several kilometres to remote places, and the whole day requires stamina. Canyons are also mostly cold and wet, hence the need for equipment listed below. However in winter we stick to dryer canyons.
Equipment To Bring
You'll need to bring the equipment listed on each Meetup invitation, generally the following: harness, carabiner, descender, safety line, helmet, wetsuit, thermals, day sack, dry bag, whistle, shoes with good grip in the wet (e.g. Dunlop Volleys), hat and sun-screen (for walk-in), towel, a change of clothes, lunch and 2+ litres of water. Floatation recommended for long swims, however, your inflated dry bag may suffice.
For each trip there'll be a small fee to cover Meetup dues, the purchase and maintenance of ropes, rescue and navigation equipment, maps, printing, laminating and organiser's incidental expenses.
Membership Fee (future)
We are currently investigating affiliation with a national association that will confer significant benefits to group members, including insurance. Affiliation and club registration will incur fees, which will be passed on to members as an annual membership fee (expected to be less than $40 per year). We expect that guests will be allowed to attend up to three trips before committing to membership.
Agreement, General Release and Waiver Of Liability
Prior to commencing a canyoning trip, you will be required to sign an Agreement, General Release and Waiver Of Liability. This states you are responsible for your own safety and accept all personal risk. You agree not to pursue any claims or legal actions against members for death, injuries, costs or losses arising from your participation in the activities of Wollemi Wanderers. You promise to act with care and caution and cooperate with other participants for the safety and well-being of all participants.
