For the fifteenth edition of our Great Exhibitions series, we’re heading to Brutus in Rotterdam to experience the first solo exhibition by rising Afghan-Dutch artist Narges Mohammadi: "Er kraait geen haan naar".
Born in Kabul in 1993 and now living in the Netherlands, Mohammadi crafts deeply intimate installations that give shape to memory, migration, and invisible care work. Working with tactile and symbolic materials — flour, sand, cardamom, clay — she builds fragile domestic scenes: chairs, sewing machines, oil lamps, a table set for dinner. They evoke the hidden labor of mothers, the resilience of those who build safety out of scarcity, and the soft power of routine in the face of chaos.
This exhibition is an ode to those who “speak the language of poverty,” drawn from Mohammadi’s own family story and from wider questions of what it means to carry love and survival in uncertain times.
🧵 After the exhibition, we’ll head to Stadshaven Brouwerij, one of Rotterdam’s top craft breweries, located in the redeveloped harbor area nearby. It’s the perfect spot to grab a beer (or more) together and, for those who want, stick around for dinner in good company.
