What I do not understand 

is that you have something like 3,500 members of this meetup, but you are lucky if 6 respond. 

Ok, that has been accrued over a number of years, but I think that for all time, you would have been lucky if only 1,000 turned up - even that sounds fortunate. But it looks like people have a great rush of enthusiasm which wanes very quickly. 

In my experience, you are extremely lucky if one third (to one half  - rarely) of respondents who say they will turn up, actually turn up. 

C'est la vie.
