Part II: What Is Metaphysics, from Basic Writings by Martin Heidegger
For the next few weeks, we'll be reading selections from Basic Writings by Martin Heidegger.
We're starting with Part II: What Is Metaphysics? This chapter is taken from a lecture that Heidegger gave in 1929, shortly after his magnum opus Being and Time was published. Rather than a history lesson about metaphysics as the title might imply, it's more of a quick recap of his theory from B&T about the possibility of Dasein's being-in-the-world - and how the existence of the world discloses itself to Dasein through the experience of anxiety.
OK but who the heck is Dasein? You are! So am I. Don't worry, we'll cover that. :)
It's Heidegger, so obviously it's going to be a bit weird & difficult. But there's no need to be afraid! We'll make it easy and fun!
Who are we?
We're a reading group that welcomes all - young, old, completely new to philosophy or well versed, from keen students to those who've never darkened the door of a lecture room. We read both long & short texts - but you don't need to have been coming from the start of our longer reads. You can dive in at any point along the way!
We usually head to the pub to continue the conversation after our meetings.
