What we're about

The mission of this group is exactly what the name implies, we want to provide good company and a positive atmosphere to experience those things that, for whatever reason, you either weren't able to do before or don't get to do often enough. To work toward that, we try to offer a wide variety of things for you to do with us. We try to cater to the interests of as many people as possible. But we are few and you are many, and this means to do what we want as well as possible, we need your help. Feel free to email me with any suggestions you might have. We won't do everything, but I can promise that we'll give everything fair consideration. This group is special because of its members, and I look forward to meeting and building new experiences with as many of you as possible. Hope to see you soon!

Not So Urban Athletics: Harriman Iron Mines Hike

Lake Skannatati Parking

The Industrial Revolution. The automobile. Iron Man. What do these things have in common? They owe their origins to the advent of the iron age, a period of technological and cultural development that has shaped the modern world. Without the discovery of iron you’d be…hopping on your horse to go pick up groceries from Whole Foods. Taking a sailing ship to your vacation in Ibiza; you’d better have a lot of PTO saved up. Keeping your fingers crossed, hoping that aliens never tried to conquer the earth because there would be no Iron Man. And without Iron Man there would be no Avengers to save us. We owe a lot to the guys that discovered this element. Let’s pay homage to those that helped build the world as we know it today, and in turn keep us safe from chaos and extinction. We’re going to take a hike through the remnants of several of Harriman State Park’s once bustling iron mines. Our path will give us a glimpse of a time long past, including the rubble of vacant mining villages as well as the mouths of the mines themselves. The Important Stuff ... • This is going to be an INTERMEDIATE hike of about 6 miles. You don't need to be a world-class athlete to participate, but you need to be in decent physical shape. We will be out all day so leave your afternoon/evening open. • This is a social hike, the pace will be moderate -- we'll be stopping to take in the views and smell the flowers. If you yearn to channel your inner Mountain Goat and feel the need to race everyone to the top of the mountain, this is not the hiking trip for you. • Dress in layers of non-cotton clothing, wear hiking boots or trail shoes (I wouldn't recommend sneakers but that is at your discretion), a hat, bring 2 liters of fluid, a packed lunch and/or snacks. • Rain cancels the hike. • No guests allowed, sorry. How To Get There ... Driving Directions: Take Route 17 north to Sloatsburg, New York. Just beyond the center of town, make a right at a traffic light onto the Seven Lakes Drive, entering Harriman State Park. Follow Seven Lakes Drive for about 8 miles to the parking area for Lake Skannatati, on the left side of the road. The turnoff to the parking area is 0.7 mile beyond the Kanawauke Circle. Please post if you are driving and can pick up passengers (how many and from where), If you need a ride, please be proactive and contact a driver directly. Passengers, as a courtesy you should chip in for gas, tolls, and coffee for the driver.

Urban Athletics: Kickball for Grownups (Co-ed)

William F. Passannante Ballfield

USD3.00

It's time to get kicking. Kick your neighbor. Kick your brother. Kick the big red ball. Just don't kick your dog. Game. On. If you don't know, now you know... If you've never played the game of kickball as a kid you must have grown up on Mars. But as a quick primer, it's a game with rules similar to baseball -- except instead of using a bat to hit a little ball, you use your feet to kick a ball about 10x the size of a baseball. Kick the ball, run to the base, avoid getting your ball caught mid-air or yourself tagged out. Easy. And no athletic skill is necessary, just the ability to kick! Go out and practice now to get ready. Kick the postman when he delivers your bills. Kick that neighbor who won't turn down his stereo. Just get kicking! If you haven't played the game in 20 years, here are the general rules we will be using https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/64476072/Kickball%20Rules.pdf A $3.00 organization fee will be collected at this event, your host is in the running for hardest working person on meetup. The important stuff... • This is a co-ed game so ladies don't be shy to sign up. And it doesn't matter if you have no athletic ability, you just have to be willing to have a little fun. • Dress for physical activity! You'll be kicking and running so wear your sneaks, shorts and a t-shirt. • Rain or similar un-favorable weather cancels the meetup. Not! • Check the meetup site before leaving for last minute updates as well as my mobile phone number. • Please DO NOT RSVP if you do not seriously plan to attend as space is limited. No flakes allowed! If you RSVP and I notice that you have a number of no shows or have a history of last minute cancellations, you will be removed.

What day is today? Why, it's bring the pain Friday! It is once again time for us to ... Dodge. The. Ball. If you don't know, now you know ... If you've never played the game of dodgeball as a kid you must have grown up on Mars. But as a quick primer, it's a game in which players on two teams throw large balls at each other while avoiding being hit themselves. That's it. And no athletic skill is necessary! If you haven't played the game in 20 years, here are the general rules we will be using with a few modifications: Dodgeball Rules (http://www.wwcc.edu/CMS/fileadmin/PDF/Athletics/Intramurals/Dodgeball_rules.pdf) A $3.00 organization fee will be collected at this event, your host is in the running for hardest working person on meetup.
