Taste of Mount Benson from Westwood Lake

Details

Due to the community event happening at Westwood Lake this coming weekend, I think parking will be an issue so we will instead park at or around the parking area on Arbot Rd. Just turn onto Arbot and continue to the end, you will see the parking area on the left. If the parking area is full, you will at least be able to park on the street. So disregard the meeting at the washroom portion of the description.

This is a moderate (70%) to intermediate hike, not suitable for beginners I would think unless you have a wonderful sense of adventure kind of attitude in which case sign on up if you wish and give it a shot, keeping in mind though that you are responsible for your own actions and possible outcomes (please read disclaimer down below). The hike is about 12-13km in length with an approx. 450 meters elevation gain. The moderate portion of the hike will see us starting from Westwood Lake and hike towards Witch Craft lake. For the Benson portion, the plan is to hike up along the stream which is less used, well marked and steepish in places which takes us up higher than the first lookout, connecting and following the main route on our return. The Benson section of the hike is the intermediate portion of course consisting of a good 30-45 minute climb ( steep in places, actually steep all the way) before we start descending (again some steep sections here). We will stop part way down at a view point (bring a snack) for about 15 minutes or so before continuing with our return to Westwood Lake. The pace will be moderate. So if you are interested in Benson but don't want to commit to a full hike up to the summit then this little jaunt may work for you. Estimated time: 4-4.5 hours. Required Gear: I like good hiking boots, bringing water of course is generally a good idea and clothing to fit the occasion. Hiking poles can also be useful to have but are not necessary if they don't work for you. I find poles helpful as the hike can play havoc on knees. We will meet at the picnic table near the washroom at Westwood. Also, if you want to carpool with someone, you can park one car at Witchcraft and end your hike there if you feel that a round trip back to Westwood would be to much. Something to consider.
