Joffre Lakes Trail: Intermediate

Details
About the Hike
READ THE DESCRIPTION
Discover this scenic out-and-back trail near Nesuch, British Columbia. It’s known for its challenging terrain and is a favorite for backpackers, campers, and hikers, so expect to see others along the way. The trail is open year-round, offering beautiful views in every season. Please note, dogs are not permitted.
Joffre Lakes Trail features stunning alpine lakes and glacier views. The well-marked path includes a long, steady incline and is one of the most popular hikes in the region.
The first lake is a short walk from the parking area, often crowded with families. The path to the second lake is longer and more demanding, but manageable at a consistent pace. The final stretch to the upper lake is brief, with an optional steep section near the middle lake.
The route offers diverse scenery—meadows, waterfalls, glaciers, and lakes with shifting colors. The views become more impressive as you go.
Facilities are minimal. The main washroom is near the trailhead, and an outhouse is available at the campground, which has no shelters or picnic tables. Water can be filtered from the lake, but swimming is not allowed.
Permits are required and may be checked at various points, so keep them handy. Mosquitos are common, so bring repellent. Campsites are first come, first served, and it’s best to arrive early to secure a spot.
Snow can linger outside of peak summer months. Most hikers manage without spikes, but trekking poles help, especially on the descent. Winter camping may be restricted due to snow, so check ahead before planning a cold-season trip.
