A couple of years ago a good friend of mine told me about walking a 3.4 mile loop around Island Heights.I started walking this loop recently and I really enjoyed it so I decided to list it.
First a little backgound information. In 1877 the Methodist Church decided to use Island Heights as its location for camp meetings and summer resort. Island Heights is the most intact example of a planned religious resort in Ocean County and one of the best preserved in the state. Island Heights has a population (2022 estimate) of 1,695 people. It is a borough in Ocean County. It has a Historic District bounded by Toms River, Summit, and River Avenues. It was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1980. Island Heights also has a .5 mile boardwalk with Victorian homes that sit high along the northern edge of the street that borders the walkway.
We will walk the 3.4 mile loop around the island. After finishing this loop we will take a short break for snacks, water, clothing adjustment etc. We then take New Route around the Historic District. The new route is approximately 5 miles. The distance is 8--8.5 miles at a 3 mph pace. We will be walking on pavement and boardwalks .We will stop at the Library on the First Part of Walk.
Afterwards we can have lunch near the parking lot.. There are restrooms at Island Heights Library and maybe a few porta -potties on the route. There are no restrooms at the start of the hike .There are many places on Route 37 for restrooms ..The address of the library is 121 Central Avenue-Island Heights NJ 08732. It is at the intersection of Central and Summit Avenues. We will be visiting The John Peto Museum, Grenley House (Gingerbread House), Island Heights Cottage Museum, Island Heights Methodist Church, Saint Getrude Mission Church, The Methodist Camp Meeting Grounds and the Dillon House.
After lunch we can add extra miles ( 2.5----- 3 miles) on Different Streets around the Island.
