Weather forecast = Partly cloudy, sunny.
We are going kayaking from Fletcher's Boat House down to Georgetown and will meet at Fletcher's at 10:30. It is a easy six mile round trip with a stop for lunch at the Georgetown water front.
Flat water, no rapids good for beginners but it is a decent workout. I will be glad to give some basic instruction for those who have not been kayaking before.
Approximate time = 3 hours.
Fletcher's rents kayaks (& paddles), bikes and canoes, life jackets are provided.
Take 66 East to Key Bridge. Cross the bridge and turn left onto Canal road (instead of right into Georgetown on M). Keep along the canal, pass Georgetown U., left at the next fork in the road, and after several miles you will see another split in the road, an old multi story house on the left and a small stone wall. Turn down the little road between the house and the wall into Fletchers parking area. (Careful, it is a one lane road and cars go both ways).
!It is better not to take Chain Bridge from McLean / Arlington because it is a very difficult U-turn.
At the bottom of the ramp into the parking area you can either drive straight into the tunnel to more parking or turn left into the first parking area.
Go to M Street in Georgetown and follow it past Key Bridge, it will turn into Canal Rd. Then follow directions above.
The rental shack is across the bridge over the canal. The boats cost approximately $25 for a 2 seater all day. (split with someone else and it is $12.50). You can also purchase, sunscreen, bottled water and hamburgers & hotdogs.
Be sure to bring appropriate clothes, snacks if you want them, water, and sunblock. A plastic baggie is good to keep your car keys in. We will travel down the Potomac to the Waterfront in Georgetown, stop for a lunch break and then kayak back. Reminder: bring a camera.
Driving back home to Va. after kayaking stay in the middle lane near Key Bridge, the first right takes you to the Whitehurst Freeway, the second right takes you to the bridge.
PS Negotiating with Fletcher's about sponsorship and $5 off coupons for members. Stay tuned.
There is a $1 charge to help me manage the Meetup.
