Save Belleayre Mountain & Catskill Park - Sign Petition

Dec 30

Skiers, Hikers, Environmentalists and Friends,

Belleayre Mountain and the surrounding Catskill Park area is currently under a severe
threat from inappropriate and destructive development that would degrade
watersheds, encroach on wild forest designated lands, introduce extreme
erosion and pollution conditions, obliterate the views that attract skiers
and other recreational users, threaten wildlife habitat and protected trout
streams, and ruin the struggling economies of the local rural communities
and picturesque hamlets.

Local community groups are asking concerned area citizens to sign a petition
to save Belleayre from a mega-resort threatening to set a precedent by
developing the mountain, partly at taxpayer expense, from below Belleayre
Ski Area to the very top of Belleayre Mountain on its western Highmount
Ridge-- over the 3,000 foot line-- with up to 19 condos, a water tower, 2
large hotels built on 35 degree slopes, a spa blasted into the mountain, 6
restaurants and a championship 18 hole golf course, along with a ski area
built at taxpayer expense right in the middle of the resort.

This is short-term profiteering at the long-term detrtiment to people and
communities.Go to :

region and sign the petition.

This situation is similar to the "Save the Shawangunk Ridge" movement of a
few years ago. That initiative succeeded in preserving an extremely
sensitive and valuable part of the Lake Minnewaska area, near New Paltz, NY,
from similar destructive development-- although pressures continue there,
too. (http://www.savetherid...)
