Walk Washpen Falls

  • to
  • James and Danny Place

    37 Edmond St. Woolston Christchurch‎ , 8062, Christchurch (map)

This will be the 2nd time we have done this walk!

Need to car pool - is out Coalgate Way. If we did it in an afternoon we could maybe do dinner at the Horarata Pub, that was fun last time.

One hours drive from Christchurch, Washpen Falls offers unique outdoor recreational facilities in a breathtaking natural setting in the midst of a working sheep, cattle and deer farm.

This fascinating walk starts at the Old Washpen Woolshed and takes you through an ancient Volcanic Canyon which is now a reserve filled with lush native bush and wonderful birdlife. This unspoilt area is easily accessed via sympathetically constructed tracks, stairs and board walks.

This fascinating track starts at Old Washpen Falls Woolshed and takes you through the Volcanic Canyon reserve filled with lush native bush and wonderful birdlife. This unspoilt area is easily accessed via sympathetically constructed tracks, stairs and board walks.

At the top of the climb you are rewarded with fabulous views across the Canterbury Plains to the sea. As you descend back down the canyon the track takes you alongside sparkling spring-fed creeks and stunning waterfalls, creating the longest tributary of the Hororata river.

A rustic covered shelter beside the lake blends beautifully with the surroundings. This is an ideal spot for a picnic or morning and afternoon tea. The facility provides a festive atmosphere and makes a wonderful venue for a catered function such as corporate dinners, company team building, birthdays and anniversaries.

Useful information about our unique & private alpine walking track:

    • Allow 2 hours (moderate fitness recommended)

    • The walk is a loop track

    • Warm clothing & sturdy footwear required

    • Bring a camera!

    • Prams are not suitable

A small maintenance fee is charged for the upkeep of the walking tracks and includes a Track Information Guide and use of walking sticks etc.

    $10.00 per adult / $5.00 per child (under 15)

Dogs are not permitted on the property.

They even have website to checkout

Bring plenty of water, snacks, and layers of clothing as it can be cool under the canopy. Insect repellant is also a MUST for this walk!

What we normally do as we meet at James and Danny Place have a coffee and a bit of a natter then we organise the cars, both James and I can take about 10 people between us! It is a good idea to text Danny telling him you will need transport [masked])

If you could just give your driver $10 dollars (per person) this is for the return ride and helps keep it affordable for all.

So you can start coming from 8 o'clock as that is when the coffee machine is on! We get away sharply by 9 o'clock so we can meet the others at the Coalgate Tavern by 10:00am.

Otherwise we will meet you at 10:00 am at the Coalgate Tavern.

Message us or text Danny on[masked]  if you would like further details :-)
