Mt Thomas Walking Track

One of our favorites, the Mt Thomas walking track does have a few options if people want to do smaller walks however the track we intend to take is the Summit Track.

We will leave from the picnic area and follow the Summit Track up a steep ridge to the summit of Mt Thomas (1023 m) for sweeping panoramic views of the Canterbury Plains, Banks Peninsula and the Southern Alps. Come back the same way or return to the car park via either Wooded Gully or Ridge tracks, which are clearly signposted from the summit. Approx 3 hours each way.

As you can see by the photo above we have done it in the past and thoroughly enjoyed it however I do have to admit this photo was taken before we started walking!

We will take a car from James and Danny Place in Woolston, Christchurch and no doubt some of our Rangiora friends will be going as well so car pooling shouldn’t be a problem. We can take up to 5 others with us.

Bring plenty of water, snacks, and layers of clothing as it can be cool under the canopy. Insect repellent is also a MUST for this walk!

What we normally do as we meet at James and Danny Place have a coffee and a bit of a natter then we organise the cars, both James and I can take about 10-12 people between us! It is a good idea to text Danny telling him you will need transport [masked])

We will also be meeting others in Rangiora outside CoffeeWorks at 9:00am

If you could just give your driver $10 dollars (per person) this is for the return ride and helps keep it affordable for all.

So you can start coming from 8 o’clock as that is when the coffee machine is on.

Message us or text Danny on[masked] if you would like further details

Look forward to seeing you there!

Essential items to carry:

- Water (note that on hot days one bottle is NOT enough)
- Food
- Warm clothing (even on hot days)
- Sun hat and sunscreen
- Rain jacket
- Strong and suitable footwear (trainers may be suitable on some walks but are often not suitable on mountain walks)

Anyone who does not come with the essential items listed above may be excluded from joining us that day. Thank you for understanding that this is for the safety of all participants.

Although we encourage anyone to join in and beginners are certainly welcome, please be aware of the fitness level some walks require. If the word 'Mt' is in the title its up a mountain and may not be a good starting walk for beginners or people with lower fitness levels. If in doubt start with one of our easier walks and work your way up.
